We present the results of research concerning the temporal and spatial variability of the dates of the onset of the growing season (OGS) in Poland using satellite data. The data from the years 2001-2010 were obtained from the MODIS Global Land Cover Dynamics Product (MCD12Q2). The study examined the relationship between the OGS dates and types of land cover, meteorological elements (air temperature and snow depth), and atmospheric circulation conditions. In the study period, the average OGS dates for the entire country showed the strongest correlation with minimum air temperature from January to March (R-2=0.95). The photosynthetic activity of vegetation in early spring was also considerably influenced by the strength of zonal flow and the type of land cover. The latest OGS dates in Poland were observed in areas with a higher share of wetlands and inland waters, and the earliest ones in urban areas and agricultural land.

Long-term variability of cloud cover in Poland (1971-2020)

Dorota Matuszko, Krzysztof Bartoszek, Jakub Soroka

Summary: This study characterizes the long-term variability of cloud cover in Poland using 50 years of data. The results show significant decreases in low-level clouds throughout the year, as well as increases in high-level and mid-level cumuliform clouds. The trends in cloud occurrence were found to be highly dependent on thermal and humidity conditions in the troposphere.

Changes in the frequency and temperature of air masses over east-central Europe

Krzysztof Bartoszek, Boguslaw M. Kaszewski

Summary: This study specifies the circulation conditions, frequency of occurrence, long-term changes, and thermal characteristics of air masses over east-central Europe from 1951 to 2020. The results show that western circulation dominates in the region, with a smaller proportion of Arctic and Tropical air masses. The frequency of most air masses analyzed exhibited short-term changes, while the frequency of two air masses from lower latitudes, mPw and T, showed long-term changes. The increase in air temperature in east-central Europe since the 1990s can be attributed to both the greater frequency of air masses from lower latitudes and the temperature increase in all air masses, which is a result of global warming.

Remote Sensing in Studies of the Growing Season: A Bibliometric Analysis

Marcin Siluch, Piotr Bartminski, Wojciech Zglobicki

Summary: This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of papers on the growing season published from 2000-2021. The analysis reveals that most studies focus on vegetation growth, with Asia, Europe, and North America being the main regions of research. The results show that satellite data is superior to low-altitude and ground-based data in providing information on plant vegetation. Wheat and rice are the most frequently studied crops.

Mapping the albedo of the active surface at different stages of the growing season using data from various sources

Piotr Bartminski, Marcin Siluch

Summary: The albedo of active surfaces is crucial for the Earth's energy balance, and satellite data, despite its limitations, has been commonly used for its determination. The development of UAV technology provides new possibilities for albedo measurement, and the use of appropriate validation algorithms and conversion algorithms can improve the quality of collected results.

Assessment and Quantitative Evaluation of Loess Area Geomorphodiversity Using Multiresolution DTMs (Roztocze Region, SE Poland)

Marcin Siluch, Waldemar Kociuba, Leszek Gawrysiak, Piotr Bartminski

Summary: The geodiversity of loess areas can be quantitatively assessed through the analysis of topographic texture and statistical characterization of erosional landforms. The resolution of the digital terrain models has an inverse relationship with the accuracy of valley delimitation. Two indicators, Relative Valley Area (RVA) and Area-normalised Valley Cubature (AVC), are proposed for studying geomorphodiversity in geologically homogeneous areas.

Long-term variability of the low-level cloud base height in Poland

Dorota Matuszko, Krzysztof Bartoszek, Jakub Soroka

Summary: The aim of the study is to analyze the long-term variability of low-level cloud base heights in Poland from 1971 to 2020. Data from six weather stations were used, which measured cloud base heights using different devices. The analysis revealed that the height of Cumulonimbus and Stratocumulus cloud bases has increased, while the height of Cumulus cloud bases has decreased in recent years. This trend can be attributed to the increase in temperature and decrease in relative air humidity in the lower troposphere.

In Situ VIS-NIR Spectroscopy for a Basic and Rapid Soil Investigation

Guillaume Debaene, Piotr Bartminski, Marcin Siluch

Summary: Visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy is used in soil science to predict soil properties. This study measured reflectance spectra directly on bare untouched soils and established prediction models for C content, N content, and soil texture. Satisfactory models were obtained with spectral pre-processing, and the inclusion of moisture and temperature as auxiliary data improved some models. Maps of C, N, and clay content were generated for field screening.

RELATIONSHIPS BET wEEN SUNSHINE DURATION AND AIR TEMPERATURE IN POLAND

Dorota Matuszko, Krzysztof Bartoszek, Jakub Soroka

Summary: The aim of this paper is to characterize the trends of sunshine duration and air temperature in Poland and help understand the mechanism of contemporary climate change. The analysis of data from 25 synoptic stations in Poland from 1971 to 2020 reveals that the points of change in the level of stabilization of sunshine duration and air temperature are close to each other, confirming the known periods of global dimming and global brightening. The linear regression model further confirms the influence of sunshine duration on daytime air temperature in Poland during the warm part of the year.
