Summary: To examine the gender gap in invited publications in high-impact psychology journals, Mackelprang et al. (2023) compared the share of women authors with a base rate of women among psychology professors. However, this descriptive comparison provides limited insight into the actual gender disparity. The authors emphasize the need to avoid outcome-dependent selection and suggest an alternative approach for a more accurate understanding of gender disparities in academia.

Summary: The study found that conflict of interest reporting in nonpharmacological early autism intervention research is often missing, misleading, and incomplete, with accurate reporting being the exception. This reflects and criticizes established standards in autism intervention research.

Summary: Nomura et al. (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2022) found that children whose mothers were pregnant during Superstorm Sandy had a higher risk of psychopathology. Their research used data from a unique cohort of children established before Sandy to examine the mental health of children based on their prenatal exposure to the storm. These findings contribute to the growing evidence that prenatal stressors can lead to stress responses in the fetus and increase the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Summary: The article proposes replacing personality disorders with a new classification of interpersonal disorders. It suggests that the trait model effectively addresses the limitations of categorical syndromes in personality disorders and incorporates the dynamics emphasized in the interpersonal model. Weaknesses of the interpersonal model that have prevented its official adoption are identified.

Summary: Treatments for eating disorders need to address not only the cognitions and behaviors associated with the disorder, but also the co-occurring symptoms and disorders. It is important to consider the role of symptoms like mood, anxiety, and obsessionality, as well as co-occurring disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance use disorders. The current research priorities, including mechanism-based treatment development, transdiagnostic symptomatology, and patient perspectives, can help advance treatment research and develop a comprehensive approach to evaluation and treatment planning.

Summary: Narvaez et al. argue against mainstream evolutionary psychology and propose their own developmentally informed theory as an alternative. However, we believe that contemporary evolutionary-developmental accounts have addressed the shortcomings of mainstream evolutionary psychology while maintaining an adaptationist perspective.

Summary: The study by Takahashi et al. showed high heritability of callous-unemotional traits at age 7, with genetic influences on these traits varying between childhood and adolescence. Future research should take into account age differences and measurement considerations when identifying genetic loci related to callous-unemotional traits. Additionally, environmental influences on the stability of these traits highlighted in the study could have implications for treatment.

Summary: Clean eating is a popular trend in Western countries that is linked to disordered eating behaviors, but the definition of clean is contentious. The U.S. FDA and Australian food standards authority have taken little action to regulate clean dietary labels. Educating consumers to be critical of food labels is predicted to be the most efficient way to address the clean eating trend.

Summary: The authors agree that sexual science should be more inclusive and generalizable, but express concerns about the method used to categorize samples as WEIRD or Not WEIRD. By reanalyzing the data, they find that the EIRDness metrics were not strongly correlated and countries classified as WEIRD did not differ significantly from non-WEIRD countries in terms of EIRDness. The authors also raise concerns about the applicability and unintended political implications of the WEIRDness critique.

Summary: This article discusses the transdiagnostic revolution in neurodevelopmental disorders and highlights the lack of mapping between current classification methods and research data at various levels. The authors argue that traditional diagnostic taxonomies are not suitable for explaining variability and complexity, and propose the use of transdiagnostic methods. In this commentary, the alignment between the transdiagnostic revolution and the neurodiversity paradigm is explored, and the potential of transdiagnostic methods in promoting neurodiversity-affirmative research and practice is identified.

Summary: This commentary highlights the scarcity of evidence for treating ADHD symptoms in the context of autism compared to other subpopulations such as tic disorders and intellectual disability, despite the extensive evidence base for treating ADHD in general. It discusses the dilemma clinicians face in relying on limited evidence for treating ADHD in specific subpopulations or deriving conclusions from the broader body of evidence on ADHD treatment. The commentary also explores potential avenues for future research to address this clinical problem.

Summary: The authors of the study concluded that there was no rise in individualism, continuing collectivism, and no effect of modernization on individualism in contemporary China. However, our reanalysis of their data suggested that individualism has been increasingly accepted and associated with positive aspects of life in China over recent decades.

Summary: The study found that measures assessing eating disorders often overlook underrepresented identities, resulting in limited normative data. Attempts to provide norms for transgender adults were unsuccessful due to high rates of invalid responses, leading to recommendations for conducting research. However, lack of evidence supporting these recommendations and failure to address the central problem were identified as major concerns in the study.
