Summary: X-ray tomography revealed air bubbles in the top coat of wind turbine blades, impacting the crack initialization and overall performance. Coating systems with fewer bubbles showed significant advantage in performance on the rain erosion tester.

High-speed plasma treatment of polyethylene terephthalate films using ultrasound assisted dielectric barrier discharge

Cheng Fang, Yukihiro Kusano, Alexander Bardenshtein

Summary: The study successfully improved the wettability of PET films by using an air-to-air type atmospheric pressure DBD plasma in helium with ultrasonic irradiation, showing significant effects even at high treatment speeds. This research opens up new possibilities for high-speed plasma treatment of PET films by embedding pneumatic generators into existing commercial machines.

Symmetric expressions of surface tension components

Reinosuke Kusano, Yukihiro Kusano

Summary: The surface tensions of solid materials have been studied and used for industrial or engineering applications for over 200 years. Owens and Wendt developed a model to calculate the surface tensions and tension components using measured contact angles. The existing statistical analysis is not suitable for practical use due to the preference for fewer test liquids and scattered measured data. This study proposes symmetric linear and circular expressions of the model to determine surface tension components of solids and liquids, respectively, allowing appropriate choices of test liquids or solids.

Saltwater-wettability on polymer surfaces and determination of surface tension

Reinosuke Kusano, Gideon Boulton, Yukihiro Kusano

Summary: The static contact angle measurement was conducted with saltwater on unsaturated polyester plates and high-density polyethylene sheets. The results show that increasing salt concentration tends to increase contact angles on polyester, while polyethylene exhibits poor wetting of saltwater. The differences in wettability at different salt concentrations can be attributed to variations in the polar components of surface tension of the polymers.
