Summary: Polymer brushes can be produced by surface-initiated polymerization using initiators or chain transfer agents. This manuscript presents an alternative method using non-covalent host-guest interactions to immobilize initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization. These non-covalent initiators can generate supramolecular polymer brushes with film thicknesses over 100 nm.

Summary: This study developed a novel method of in situ surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization using nonvolatile ionic liquid components to form concentrated polymer brushes on a silicon wafer, which was confirmed by gel permeation chromatography. The effectiveness of in situ preparation for CPBs using the coating technique was established for the first time in this paper.

Summary: Surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization using oxygen (O-2-SI-RAFT) allows material-independent surface coating on various substrates in the presence of air. The excellent growth of polymer brushes, including the highest reported growth on Ti/TiO2 substrates, was characterized. Additionally, large surfaces can be coated with polymer brushes by O-2-SI-RAFT, demonstrating versatility and efficiency.

Summary: By grafting linear-bottlebrush amphiphilic copolymers onto the surface of silica nanoparticles, nanoparticle micelles with the ability to encapsulate and stabilize non-polar structures in aqueous media were successfully formed. These nanoparticles not only enhance oil encapsulation, but also provide an alternative dispersant system to address oil pollution in the environment.

Summary: Diazocine-functionalized initiators were synthesized for controlled radical polymerizations, and their efficiency in polymerizations of methyl acrylate and methacrylate was tested. The initiation of the reactions required high amounts of reducing agents and catalysts. Additionally, violet light irradiation during the reactions caused retardation or termination of the anilide compound.

Summary: We synthesized a thermoresponsive polymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution using organic photo-redox-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP). The O-ATRP was mediated by a photoredox catalyst 1,2,3,5-tetrakis (carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN) under visible light irradiation. The polymerization of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) chains from a hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based macroinitiator was characterized using various analytical methods. The resulting PMMA-grafted HPC (PMMA-g-HPC) showed a widened lower critical solution temperature (LCST) window and an inverse pH dependency of the LCST, making it promising for various applications including drug delivery systems.

Summary: In this study, surface-modified upconversion nanomaterials (UCNPs) were used for the first time to achieve sensitive detection of CYFRA21-1. The combination of UCNPs and ATRP amplifies the detection signal and improves sensitivity. The proposed upconversion fluorescent platform shows excellent selectivity and can be used for screening potential lung cancer patients.

Summary: An improved procedure for halogen atom and chalcogen group transfer radical additions is reported, utilizing the thermal decomposition of DTBHN to produce reactive methyl radicals. This initiation method generates gaseous or volatile byproducts for easy purification, with simple reaction conditions and broad scope of application demonstrated. Additionally, an alternative source of radicals, DTBPO, is also shown to be effective under identical conditions.

Summary: A hydrophilic adsorbent was prepared for the enrichment of N-glycopeptides. The adsorbent was synthesized through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and photo-initiated thiol-ene reaction. It showed great potential in capturing N-glycopeptides from IgG digest and human serum digest with high sensitivity.
