Summary: This study analyzed data from 1.31 million patients in England to examine the risk of death for individuals with 12 common cardiovascular diseases compared to those without. The findings reveal an increased risk of death for those with any of the 12 diseases. This supports the importance of prevention efforts for all types of cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the risk factors for in-hospital stroke mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, in order to provide targeted research. The pooled 30-day in-hospital stroke mortality rate will be analyzed, with meta-regression used to assess associated factors, as well as subgroup and sensitivity analyses conducted for further insights.

Summary: The study found that the diagnosis and treatment rates of poststroke depression have been increasing among stroke patients over the years. Women have a higher diagnosis rate compared to men, while racial/ethnic minorities have a lower diagnosis rate. Furthermore, women and older patients are more likely to receive treatment.

Summary: This study examined the risks of stroke recurrence and mortality after first and recurrent strokes using Danish nationwide health registries. The results showed that the risk of stroke recurrence was substantial for both ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage, but the risks varied among different patient subgroups. Additionally, the risk of mortality was higher after a recurrent stroke compared to a first-time stroke.

Summary: The study aimed to provide up-to-date population-based information on long-term survival, causes of death, and recurrence after stroke. The results showed relatively high stroke survival rates, with a potential slowdown in improvement over recent decades. The common occurrence of changed pathogenetic mechanisms between first-ever and recurrent stroke highlights the value of reassessment in recurrent stroke.

Summary: This study found that among Taiwanese adults, the ADH1B rs1229984 TC + CC genotype and alcohol consumption of at least 150 ml/week may increase the risk of developing hemorrhagic stroke. The ALDH2 rs671 genotype was not associated with hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke among alcohol drinkers.

Summary: This study assessed the subjective experience of motor-assisted movement exercisers (MME) in people living with ALS and analyzed their likelihood of recommending MME treatment. The results showed positive effects of MME treatment, especially in terms of enhancing a sense of achievement, reducing stiffness, and improving overall well-being. Patients were highly satisfied with MME therapy and most of them achieved their therapeutic objectives.

Summary: This study investigated the association between changes in regular physical activity and the risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as well as the optimal range of physical activity based on energy expenditure. The results showed that starting and maintaining regular physical activity were both associated with a lower risk of incident AF. Based on energy expenditure, new exercisers who engaged in regular physical activity for at least 1,500 MET-min/week and exercise maintainers who engaged in at least 1,000 MET-min/week had a lower risk of developing AF compared to non-exercisers.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the association between COVID-19 vaccination during early pregnancy and spontaneous abortion (SAB) by analyzing data from the Vaccine Safety Datalink. We found that the observed protective effect of the vaccine on SAB was attenuated when the surveillance period extended from March 8, 2021, to June 28, 2021. We also explored different methodological approaches and found that the timing of the surveillance played a significant role in the observed vaccine-SAB association.

Summary: In the past few decades, the increasing number of older adults with chronic neurological conditions due to global demographic transition has become a significant issue. These conditions greatly affect the cognitive function and physical ability of older adults and have a long preclinical phase. The concept of brain health has emerged to promote preventive measures for high-risk groups and the general population in order to reduce the burden of neurological diseases. This review discusses the concept of brain health from the aging and preventive care perspectives, explores the mechanisms underlying aging and brain aging, highlights the interplay of various factors leading to deviation from brain health to brain disease, and provides an overview of lifelong strategies to promote brain health.

Summary: This study conducted a large-scale analysis and identified eleven new risk loci for coronary artery calcification (CAC), a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis. These new loci are related to bone mineralization, phosphate catabolism, and hormone metabolic pathways. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the genetic architecture of CAC and provide potential targets for therapeutic interventions.
