Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether improving older adults' attitudes towards computers through engaging computer activities could increase the efficacy of computer interventions. The results showed that the group using MICS + CCI did not significantly outperform the CCI only group in cognitive improvement, but participants who had improved attitudes towards computers showed enhanced executive function.

Summary: This study aims to test if there are disparities in dementia rates among individuals aged 90 or older based on race or ethnicity. By using baseline clinical evaluation of 541 ethnically and racially diverse participants, the study found differences in associations between core demographic characteristics and measures of physical and cognitive performance across different racial/ethnic groups.

Summary: This study found that there are associations between sex hormones and bone metabolism with cognitive impairment in Chinese oldest-old females. The results showed that participants with cognitive impairment had higher levels of age, progesterone, prolactin, and estradiol. Total type I collagen N-terminal elongation peptide and prolactin levels were positively associated with cognitive impairment. Therefore, maintaining a balance in sex hormones and bone metabolism may have significant effects on cognitive function during the aging process.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of dietary diversity changes on cognitive impairment in adults aged 80 and older. The results showed that compared to individuals with consistent high dietary diversity, those with consistent low dietary diversity and those with a change from high to low dietary diversity had an increased risk of cognitive impairment. These individuals also experienced a faster decline in cognitive function during the follow-up period. Participants who had a change from low to high dietary diversity had a similar incidence of cognitive impairment as those with consistent high dietary diversity. Furthermore, individuals with a large decline in dietary diversity had a higher risk of cognitive impairment. Maintaining a high dietary diversity is beneficial for cognitive function in the oldest-old, especially for females and those with lower education levels.

Summary: Hippocampal sclerosis of aging (HS-A) is a common age-related neuropathological lesion characterized by neuronal loss and astrogliosis in the subiculum and CA1 subfield of the hippocampus. It is associated with cognitive decline similar to Alzheimer's disease. This study compares the traditional binary diagnosis of HS-A with a novel quantitative measure, revealing associations between HS-A and other neuropathologies and cognitive impairment that were not detected using the traditional approach.

Summary: Stroke is a common cause of disability and death, particularly among older adults worldwide. Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common consequence of stroke, leading to long-term disability and reduced quality of life. Acupuncture has been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a complementary therapy for stroke care, and this review provides comprehensive evidence of its beneficial effects on PSCI. The mechanisms of acupuncture on PSCI involve anti-neuronal apoptosis, synaptic plasticity promotion, inflammation alleviation, and regulation of brain energy metabolism disorders. The findings of this study offer scientific support for the application of acupuncture in treating PSCI.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that commensal microbiota may have significant effects on both health and disease, including cerebrovascular disease. Gut microbes can impact physiology by metabolizing dietary factors and host-derived substrates, leading to the creation of active compounds such as toxins. This review highlights the complex interplay between microbiota, their metabolites, and essential functions for human health, including metabolism regulation, immune system modulation, and brain development. It also discusses the role of gut dysbiosis in cerebrovascular disease, specifically in stroke phases, and the potential involvement of intestinal microbiota in post-stroke cognitive impairment and dementia, as well as potential therapeutic opportunities in targeting microbiota in this context.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of intramuscular (IM) glucocorticoid injection and intra-articular (IA) glucocorticoid injection in reducing knee pain for patients with knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that at 4 weeks, IM glucocorticoid injection was less effective in reducing pain compared to IA injection, but at 8 and 24 weeks, IM injection was noninferior to IA injection. There were no significant differences in all secondary outcomes between the two injection methods.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between systolic blood pressure (SBP) and health outcomes in very old individuals, taking into account factors such as blood pressure-lowering treatment, history of cardiovascular diseases, cognitive and physical fitness. The results showed that higher SBP was associated with lower all-cause mortality, but this association was not evident in fit octogenarians. SBP was not consistently associated with cognitive and functional decline.

Summary: The loss of skeletal muscle function, strength, and mass is common in older adults, and it has significant socioeconomic impact. Subclinical hypothyroidism, which is prevalent in older adults, has been associated with reduced muscle strength. Summary: This meta-analysis of data from 21 cohorts across six continents found that women have a higher risk of developing dementia than men, especially in low- and lower-middle-income economies.
