A Deep Learning Pipeline to Automate High-Resolution Arterial Segmentation With or Without Intravenous Contrast

Anirudh Chandrashekar, Ashok Handa, Natesh Shivakumar, Pierfrancesco Lapolla, Raman Uberoi, Vicente Grau, Regent Lee

Summary: In this study, a deep learning architecture was implemented to establish a high-throughput and automated segmentation pipeline of pathological blood vessels in CT images. The architecture showed superior results in extracting the inner lumen and wall structure of aortic aneurysms compared to a generic 3-D U-Net. This extraction method can standardize aneurysmal disease management and lays the foundation for complex geometric and morphological analysis.

Prediction of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Growth Using Geometric Assessment of Computerized Tomography Images Acquired During the Aneurysm Surveillance Period

Anirudh Chandrashekar, Ashok Handa, Pierfrancesco Lapolla, Natesh Shivakumar, Elisha Ngetich, Vicente Grau, Regent Lee

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the utility of geometric features for predicting future AAA growth. CT scans of patients with AAAs were analyzed, and it was found that AAA diameter, undulation index, and radius of curvature were significantly correlated with annual growth. These geometric features can be used to predict future AAA growth and applied to routine clinical CT scans.

Development of a novel index to characterise arterial dynamics using ultrasound imaging

Joel Ward, Xinghao Cheng, Yingyi Xiao, Pierfrancesco Lapolla, Anirudh Chandrashekar, Ashok Handa, Robin A. Cleveland, Regent Lee

Summary: After examining the role of a 'brachial artery relaxation index' as a biomarker for AAA growth, it was found that there is no correlation between this index and future aneurysm growth. This contradicts the hypothesis that physical characteristics of the brachial artery could predict AAA growth.

Summary: This study demonstrates a deep learning methodology to simulate PET images from CT images in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma without the use of radioactive tracer, and successfully predicted clinical outcomes.

Protective Role for Smooth Muscle Cell Hepcidin in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Paul Loick, Goran Hamid Mohammad, Ismail Cassimjee, Anirudh Chandrashekar, Pierfrancesco Lapolla, Alison Carrington, Mayra Vera-Aviles, Ashok Handa, Regent Lee, Samira Lakhal-Littleton

Summary: In patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), hepcidin is induced in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of the aneurysm wall and inversely correlated with the expression of LNC2. The study suggests that hepcidin has a protective role in AAA.

Summary: The study identifies Thymosin beta 4 (T beta 4) as a key regulator of LRP1 for maintaining vascular health, and highlights the role of their interaction in modulating the phenotype of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), providing insights into the mechanisms underlying aortic disease progression.
