Through large-scale clinical trials, the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) has been established as the treatment of choice for primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Although the ICD offers a confirmed mortality benefit, it may incite psychological adjustment issues within recipients. The most Predominant form of psychological morbidity for ICD patients is anxiety. The prevalence of anxiety is well documented within the context of cardiac patients; however, ICD recipients often present with device-specific concerns, including shock and death anxiety. Therefore, the interventions for these patients must be tailored to their unique concerns. This article will discuss forms and manifestations of anxiety within the ICD patient population, followed by an exploration of the components of psychosocial interventions found to be effective with these patients. The ENHANCE-AF clinical trial to evaluate an atrial fibrillation shared decision-making pathway: Rationale and study design

Tina Baykaner, Krishna Pundi, Bryant Lin, Ying Lu, Katie DeSutter, Karma Lhamo, Gotzone Garay, Julio C. Nunes, Daniel P. Morin, Samuel F. Sears, Mina K. Chung, Michael K. Paasche-Orlow, Lee M. Sanders, Thomas Jared Bunch, Mellanie True Hills, Kenneth W. Mahaffey, Randall S. Stafford, Paul J. Wang

Summary: Shared decision making in anticoagulation therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) can result in treatment plans that better reflect patients' goals and wishes, increasing patient satisfaction. However, there is a knowledge gap in using decision aids in this context. This study aims to develop and test a new decision aid to evaluate its effectiveness in a specific population.

Managing Atrial Fibrillation: The Intersection of Cardiology, Health Psychology, and the Patient Experience

Samuel F. Sears, Scarlett Anthony, Rebecca Harrell, Connor Tripp, Joanna Bowman, Saleen Khan, Aditi Naniwadekar

Summary: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac dysrhythmia, and its management requires comprehensive measures including behavioral risk reduction and medication adherence. Health psychologists play an important role in treatment, but their involvement is currently limited.

A systematic meta-review of systematic reviews about interprofessional collaboration: facilitators, barriers, and outcomes

Holly Wei, Phyllis Horns, Samuel F. Sears, Kun Huang, Christopher M. Smith, Trent L. Wei

Summary: Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is a crucial practice model for improving healthcare quality. Since 2010, there has been a significant amount of research published on IPC, highlighting its importance. This meta-review systematically synthesized the findings of systematic reviews conducted between 2010 and 2020, focusing on facilitators, barriers, and outcomes of IPC. The results highlight the interrelated nature of these factors and emphasize the need for combined efforts from organizations, teams, and individuals to improve IPC.

The GUIDE-HF trial of pulmonary artery pressure monitoring in heart failure: impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there were significant changes in heart failure event rates. Compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, the control group showed a decrease in the primary event rate, while the treatment group maintained a low event rate. These changes were not due to changes in provider- or disease-dependent factors, but were influenced by patient-dependent factors.

Mobile Assessment of Experiential Avoidance, Mood, Stress, and Attendance in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Jordan M. Ellis, Emily P. Midgette, Alexander J. Capiaghi, Alexander M. Schoemann, Samuel F. Sears, Brandon N. Kyle, Robert A. Carels, Matthew C. Whited

Summary: This study utilized mobile ecological momentary assessment to examine the relationships among experiential avoidance, mood, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation attendance. Results indicated that higher experiential avoidance and negative mood predicted poorer attendance rates for the next week. Additionally, individuals with higher experiential avoidance reported greater negative affect and perceived stress, while those with lower scores reported more positive mood.

Summary: The study found that PTSD in pediatric patients with an ICD was associated with medical and psychosocial factors, while PTSD in parents was associated with gender and child depression. Parents were more likely to meet the criteria for PTSD than youth.

Scarlett Anthony, Rebecca Harrell, Caroline Martin, Taylor Hawkins, Saleen Khan, Aditi Naniwadekar, Samuel F. Sears

Summary: Atrial fibrillation patients often experience disease-specific fears that are not routinely addressed in clinical management. Borrowing from recurrence fear models in cancer research, a patient-centric approach to disease intervention may improve outcomes for atrial fibrillation patients.
