Summary: Genetic studies show that education level, smoking, and body mass index are causally associated with the risk of ischemic stroke, with their effects acting independently. These findings suggest that modifying lifestyle factors may reduce the risk of stroke.

Summary: Genetic analysis suggests that BMI and smoking are causally linked to an increased risk of COVID-19 severe illness, while physical activity may decrease this risk. No significant association was found between alcohol consumption and COVID-19 severe illness.

Summary: This study found evidence of a halo effect in weight loss and adherence to a Mediterranean diet among untreated family members of participants in a weight-loss lifestyle intervention, but not in physical activity levels. Expansion of dietary changes from individuals to their family members can facilitate obesity prevention.

Summary: The study investigated changes in body indicators, physical activity, diet, cardiometabolic risk factors, physical capacity, and psychological well-being in middle-aged and older inactive obese women and men participating in a lifestyle intervention. The results showed decreases in weight, fat mass, and waist circumference, and increases in lean mass and certain physical capacities after the short-term intervention. However, only 25% of participants were able to maintain a healthy lifestyle six months after the intervention.

Summary: This study found that quitting smoking is often followed by substantial weight gain, however, this weight gain does not increase the risk of chronic diseases or diminish the mortality benefit of smoking cessation.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the burden of cancers in Malaysia in 2018 and found that 22.2% of cancer cases were attributable to modifiable risk factors like excess weight, alcohol intake, physical inactivity, and tobacco smoking. Smoking and excess weight were identified as the predominant factors, prompting recommendations for nationwide public health prevention campaigns targeted at these risk factors.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of an intensive lifestyle weight loss intervention on gut microbiota, with results showing that an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet and physical activity can lead to weight loss, improvements in metabolic syndrome-related markers, and modulation of gut microbiota.

Summary: The study found that AI coaching interventions, especially voice-assisted coaching through smart speakers, have the potential to increase physical activity in sedentary cancer survivors in a scalable and personalized manner. Further research is needed to replicate these findings in a larger population of cancer survivors and to explore the effects of these interventions in the general population.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of >= 150 min/wk of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and its associations with measures of obesity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy adults with overweight or obesity. The findings suggest that some adults with overweight or obesity may be more active than they perceive themselves to be, and accumulating >= 150 min/wk of MVPA may have favorable effects on weight and adiposity status.

Summary: This systematic review presents an overview of cognitive reserve evaluation approaches and examines the role of modifiable lifestyle factors in mitigating the impact of brain changes on cognition. The findings suggest that lifestyle activities, such as physical and cognitive leisure activities, may contribute to cognitive reserve and minimize the negative effects of brain changes on cognition. Further research addressing standardized measurements of lifestyle factors and mechanisms underlying cognitive reserve is needed.

Summary: Worksite exercise was found to reduce lost work time due to low back pain in firefighters. Telehealth was less costly and more effective at reducing lost work time due to low back pain compared to direct exercise supervision. Further reduction in the costs of telehealth could potentially lead to a positive net monetary benefit compared to no intervention.
