Summary: The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Variable Platyfish has been presented, which can be useful for future phylogenetic and biomedical research. The genome shares similarities with other members of Poeciliidae, making it valuable for designing primers for species detection from environmental DNA samples.

Summary: Dockless electric scooter (E-scooters) services have emerged in the United States as a new form of micro transit, which requires cities to manage their usage for safe urban environments. Research shows spatial correlation between E-scooter crashes and traffic incidents, although E-scooter incidents tend to occur near traffic signals and on primary roads, they do not fully replicate characteristics of traffic incidents.

Summary: This study investigated parasitic infections in variable platyfish and eastern mosquitofish from earthen ponds in west central Florida. The researchers identified Huffmanela cf. huffmani as the parasite infecting the swim bladder, gonad, and visceral peritoneum. They found that the nucleotide sequences of H. cf. huffmani were identical in both fish species. Pathological changes were observed, including inflammation and tissue necrosis, which could impact the organ function of the swim bladder.

Summary: This study investigated definite SUDEP cases in Bexar County over a 36-year period, finding that subtherapeutic anti-seizure medication levels were a leading risk factor for SUDEP, and obesity may also be a significant risk factor for this condition. Further case-controlled studies are needed to validate the specific role of obesity and related comorbidities in this population.

Summary: This study revealed the presence of a self-sustained population of X. hellerii in Bulgaria and Europe, indicating that climate change and warmer winters are facilitating its acclimatization and increasing the potential for colonizing new habitats, posing a high risk of becoming the next new invasive species in Southern Europe.

Summary: A retrospective study was conducted in Travis County, Texas to examine fentanyl-related fatalities. The study found a significant increase in fentanyl-related deaths over a 3-year period, primarily among males in their mid-30s. Polydrug use was common, and there is a need to raise awareness and implement harm reduction strategies to minimize public health risks.

Summary: This study analyzed the patterns of land use and land cover change and population dynamics in Collin County, Texas, and found that the conversion of field lands to built-up land covers is the primary form of land use change in the region. Additionally, the analysis using ordinary least squares and geographically weighted regression showed that population change can explain 75.15% of the change in built-up area.

Summary: The Yaqui Catfish Ictalurus pricei is a species of concern with populations declining due to water overallocation, habitat degradation, invasive species introductions, and hybridization with nonnative Channel Catfish I. punctatus. Conservation efforts are needed to secure the Yaqui Catfish, protect suitable habitat, and better define its current status in both the United States and Mexico.
