Summary: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are more vulnerable to the psychotic effects of cannabis exposure, which can be passed on to their children. Cannabis exposure has disruptive epigenetic effects, particularly in brain areas related to schizophrenia, which can be inherited across generations. These effects make autism candidate genes more susceptible to disruption, potentially leading to psychosis later in life. Therefore, there is a developmental link between autism and psychosis through the modulation of the endocannabinoid system.

Summary: This study describes the population characteristics of people with intellectual disability in New South Wales and quantifies and compares public mental health service use and costs for people with and without intellectual disability during 2014-15. It found that people with intellectual disability used public mental health services to a greater degree than other people, with higher costs per person. The study suggests that all tiers of mental health policy and service planning in Australia should explicitly consider people with intellectual disability.

Summary: The study found that over 25% of spouses of cancer survivors utilized mental health care. Spouses were less likely to use mental health care when the cancer survivor had more health conditions or elevated depressed mood. Spouses were nearly 3 times more likely to use mental health care if the cancer survivor themselves had used mental health care.

Summary: The 686 Program has been widely implemented in mainland China, but there is a lack of empirical research. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the registration and management of the Program. A total of 3993 patients with schizophrenia discharged in 2019 were included. The results showed that approximately two-thirds of patients were registered, and 88.9% of registered patients accepted the follow-up management. Factors such as gender, employment status, education level, duration of illness, and hospitalization influenced the registration and management. Patients with violent behavior and local household registration were more likely to be registered. These factors should be considered in future evaluations of the Program.

Summary: This study provides an analysis of health inequalities in Syria, specifically focusing on the spatial access to public hospitals. The findings reveal high inequality in access to public hospitals among and within governorates, with the north and eastern regions experiencing the most pronounced disparities. The use of the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method provides more nuanced insights about hospital bed allocation than the provider to population ratio (PPR) method. These findings highlight the need for further research and attention to address the disparities in health access in Syria.

Summary: This study examines the use of telehealth and changes in treatment engagement among patients with serious mental illness (SMI). The results indicate that telehealth use was higher during the COVID-19 pandemic, with most telehealth users having high treatment engagement. However, those who only received in-person services had lower engagement. The shift to telehealth preserved access to outpatient services for this population, and exploring reasons for not using telehealth may help improve care access.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people's behavior and psychological health, and living close to Green Infrastructure (GI) during the confinement period has been found to be beneficial for mental health. In Spain, where there was a strict lockdown for over three months, the study found that being near GI significantly decreased stress, anger, medication use, alcohol consumption, and visits to the doctor. Additionally, individuals with high expectations of enjoying city life after the confinement were more likely to be close to green areas. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating interconnected green spaces in urban regeneration.

Summary: The present study is the first expert consensus on minimum and optimal psychiatric bed numbers. The study used the Delphi method and included experts from both high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries. The findings suggest that many low- and middle-income countries have inadequate numbers of psychiatric beds.

Summary: This study aims to explore the satisfaction of people with severe mental illness (SMI) with the support received during the pandemic, understand the difficulties encountered when accessing mental health and primary care services, and assess the perceived need for future support from mental health services. The results show that while most participants were satisfied with the mental health support they had received, a minority were not. Additionally, the study found that a quarter of the participants thought they would need more mental health support in the coming year, which has implications for future demand on services.

Summary: The Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system distributed video telehealth tablets to homeless Veterans in 2016. A study evaluating the tablets' usage found that younger, middle-aged, rural-living Veterans with PTSD were more likely to use them, while Black individuals, those with substance use disorder, or persistent housing instability were less likely to use them. Efforts are needed to provide tailored training and support for these vulnerable populations to optimize telehealth tablet use.

Summary: This study compares the evolution of the psychosocial sector in two Australian regions before and after the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The results show different developmental pathways in the two regions, with an increase in service availability in Western Sydney and a decrease in the Australian Capital Territory. However, the diversity of available services did not increase. The study highlights the urgent need for evaluation and monitoring of the effects of the NDIS on psychosocial care in Australia, as key objectives have not been met and uncertainty has been created for service providers.

Summary: In this study, a standardized unit cost calculation tool developed in the PECUNIA project was applied to calculate the reference unit costs (RUCs) of selected education services in five European countries. The RUCs of special education services and educational therapy were calculated using information collected via literature search and contact with service providers. There was variation in the RUCs across countries, highlighting the need for further research and efforts to improve data quality.

Summary: Australia's Fifth National Mental Health Plan requires governments to report on the progress of mental health service delivery changes and plan for future service provision. Modelling uncertain demands on the system can help decision-makers understand future changes in mental health service demand and choose appropriate responses. Modelling can also enhance scrutiny, accountability, and transparency of these processes.
