Third and fourth line chemotherapy agents are not helpful in the setting of extensive stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC). We describe the case of a 43-year-old Korean patient with T4N3M1b extensive stage SCLC who responded remarkably well to treatment and experienced a prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) period following treatment with fourth line ifosfamide and carboplatin after experiencing disease progression with three previous regimens. Additionally, third line cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin (Adriamycin), and vincristine demonstrated long-term PFS periods.

Noninvasive Assessment of Liver Fibrosis with ElastPQ in Patients with Chronic Viral Hepatitis: Comparison Using Histopathological Findings

Dongmin Choo, Kyung Sook Shin, Ji Hye Min, Sun-kyoung You, Kyung-Hee Kim, Jeong Eun Lee

Summary: This study assessed the diagnostic performance of elastography point quantification (ElastPQ), transient elastography (TE), and aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet count ratio index (APRI) for the staging of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. It found that ElastPQ showed similar diagnostic accuracy to TE and was more accurate than APRI.

Tunable image quality control of 3-D ultrasound using switchable CycleGAN

Jaeyoung Huh, Shujaat Khan, Sungjin Choi, Dongkuk Shin, Jeong Eun Lee, Eun Sun Lee, Jong Chul

Summary: Unlike 2-D ultrasound, 3-D ultrasound imaging allows for visualizing a volume along three axial planes, providing a full view of anatomy. However, the 3-D ultrasound has limitations in image resolution compared to 2-D ultrasound. To overcome this, a novel unsupervised deep learning approach is proposed to improve 3-D ultrasound image quality, using high-quality 2-D ultrasound images as reference. The proposed method offers significantly improved image quality and user-friendly flexibility.

The first case report of Paragonimus westermani infection diagnosed by transbronchial lung cryobiopsy

Ka Eun Kim, Sung Soo Jung, Hee Sun Park, Jeong Eun Lee, Chaeuk Chung, Da Hyun Kang, Song - Lee, Jeong Suk Koh, Dongil Park

Summary: We present a case of pulmonary paragonimiasis diagnosed using transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC), which is considered to be a superior method to transbronchial forceps biopsy for obtaining larger specimens containing the eggs. TBLC confirmed the presence of Paragonimus westermani eggs in a 57-year-old male patient with hemoptysis and dyspnea. This highlights the potential of TBLC as a diagnostic tool for pulmonary paragonimiasis, which can be initially misdiagnosed as pneumonia, tuberculosis, or lung cancer.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of blood-based biomarkers, including blood tumor mutation burden (bTMB), to predict atezolizumab efficacy in relapsed and advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The results suggest that baseline levels and dynamic changes of blood-based biomarkers can predict atezolizumab efficacy in previously treated NSCLC patients.

Advances in new targets for immunotherapy of small cell lung cancer

Zitong Zheng, Juanjuan Liu, Junling Ma, Runting Kang, Zhen Liu, Jiangyong Yu

Summary: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with limited treatment options. Over the past decade, immunotherapy has made progress in the treatment of SCLC, but current immune checkpoint inhibitors have limited benefits for patient survival. Therefore, it is important to explore new targets and develop drugs with novel mechanisms for immunotherapy in SCLC.
