Summary: The study assessed outcomes in children undergoing adenoidectomy for mild obstructive sleep apnea and found that majority of children had resolution of obstructive symptoms post-surgery, but a portion still required additional intervention. Demographic factors such as age and baseline AHI were not predictive of which children needed additional treatment following adenoidectomy.

Summary: In children with Down syndrome, 32.5% had sleep efficiency <80%; 75.6% had an elevated arousal index; and 15.9% had total sleep time <360 minutes. More than a third of the patients had >= 3 markers of poor sleep architecture. There was no difference in children with or without obstructive sleep apnea.

Summary: The study demonstrates that as the severity of the disease increases, OSA broadly impacts sleep EEG, making information from different frequency bands more similar. EEG activity and irregularity information is significantly associated with polysomnographic variables in the most severely affected children, indicating disruptions in both micro and macro sleep. Furthermore, relationships between sleep EEG and cognitive scores, particularly in the delta(1) and beta(2) bands, suggest pronounced associations with language, visual-spatial processing, and executive function.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of adenoidectomy on obstructive sleep apnea in young children. The results showed that OSA symptoms improved in some children after the surgery, but younger children were more likely to require subsequent tonsillectomy. Additional prospective studies are needed to validate these findings.

Summary: The study identified predictors of severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children under 3 years of age to be Down syndrome and tonsillar hypertrophy, with children more likely to be male and have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Therefore, children with these conditions should be prioritized for polysomnography.

Summary: SDB is highly prevalent but underdiagnosed in older U.S. adults, with only 32% of those reporting symptoms being diagnosed with sleep apnea. Older adults with SDB are significantly more likely to have impaired odor identification but not odor sensitivity.

Summary: A novel deep-learning approach using raw electrocardiogram tracing (ECG) was proposed to simplify the diagnosis of pediatric OSA. A convolutional neural network (CNN) regression model was implemented to predict pediatric OSA and derive severity categories. The diagnostic performance of the CNN model outperformed previous algorithms relying on ECG-derived features. The proposed CNN model provides a simpler, faster, and more accessible diagnostic test for pediatric OSA.

Summary: In a study involving adolescents, home portable-monitor (PM) sleep testing demonstrated diagnostic agreement of 80% with in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) for obstructive sleep apnea. Most participants preferred PM over PSG and found PM easy to set up. These findings support the use of home PM for prompt diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in adolescents.

Summary: This study evaluated the role of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire and associated subscales in predicting the severity of obstructive sleep apnea in children. The results showed that the snoring subscale was more predictive than the sleep-related breathing disorders subscale, but further research is needed to improve the effectiveness of the questionnaire.

Summary: This study examined the multidimensional nature of apathy in patients with KS, ARCI, and AUD, finding social apathy to be the most prominent symptom. Discrepancies between patient and caregiver ratings were observed, with caregivers reporting more severe apathy. Caregiver-reported behavioral and social apathy were related to everyday functioning.

Summary: This study retrospectively investigated sleep disordered breathing in infants with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) who received gene replacement therapy. The results showed improvement in sleep disordered breathing after treatment. However, the clinical significance of abnormal polysomnogram parameters for children without sleep disordered breathing or neuromuscular weakness remains unclear.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and respiratory insufficiency in children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) hospitalized for acute respiratory illnesses. The results showed that OSA was associated with an increased need for invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation in BPD patients.

Summary: Electrical injury (EI) can cause physical sequelae, neurological symptoms, and cognitive decline. The lack of official diagnostic criteria may lead to incorrect diagnoses, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the neuropsychological and psychiatric features of EI in clinical practice.

Summary: In this study, a flow-structure interaction (FSI) computational model was used to estimate critical closing pressure (Pcrit) in patient-specific upper airway models obtained from MRI scans in children with Down syndrome. The agreement between measured and estimated Pcrit from FSI models and their significant association with AHI supports the validity of Pcrit estimates in reflecting the severity of OSA. The study also found that regions with the lowest stiffness in the upper airway overlapped with areas of collapse on dynamic MRI scans, further validating the FSI model.

Summary: The study evaluated carotid changes and inflammatory profiles in children with OSA compared to healthy controls. Results showed that OSA was associated with increased proinflammatory cytokines and inflammation markers, with IL-6 and IL-8 negatively impacting carotid function. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine if the inflammatory changes observed in children with OSA lead to atherosclerosis.

Summary: Computational fluid dynamics simulations of respiratory airflow have the potential to change the clinical assessment of regional airway function in health and disease, in pulmonary medicine and otolaryngology. The study proposes phase contrast velocimetry MRI as a non-invasive reference for validating respiratory CFD, demonstrating good qualitative and quantitative agreement between the two techniques in assessing airflow velocity. This preliminary comparison lays the foundation for further validation studies towards the clinical adoption of respiratory CFD.

Summary: The relationship between the severity of obstructive sleep apnea and neurobehavioral morbidity is unclear. This study compares the neurobehavioral symptoms of mild sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea, finding that children with mild sleep-disordered breathing have more abnormal executive function scores and higher rates of inattention and hyperactivity compared to children with obstructive sleep apnea.

Summary: In this study, mixed transition-metal oxides (MTMOs) were developed and tested as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in neutral media. The results showed that MTMOs anchored on an activated carbon support exhibited higher ORR electrocatalytic activity compared to their counterparts anchored on a graphene support, making them a cost-effective alternative to expensive platinum in energy conversion and electrocatalysis.

Summary: In this study, manganese oxide-silver nanocomposites anchored on graphitic mesoporous carbon were prepared as cathodic catalysts to improve the ORR kinetics and inhibit biofilm growth on the cathode surface of air-cathode microbial fuel cells fed with sewage. The MnOx-Ag/GMC nanocomposites showed excellent ORR performance and high antibacterial activity, leading to higher maximum power density and lower closed circuit potential decay in MFCs compared to Pt/C cathode-based MFCs.

Summary: The correlation between caregiver- and child-reported quality of life (QOL) in children with mild sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) was assessed. The study found a weak correlation between caregiver and child report, especially for young children. Higher child age and health literacy were associated with closer agreement between caregiver and child report.

Summary: This study proposes a Bayesian joint model with extended random effects structure for simultaneous inference on treatment effects over time and drop-out patterns in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. The model includes flexible splines to characterize circadian variation in blood pressure sequences and shows discrepancies in estimating daytime blood pressure evolution compared to its conventional two-stage counterpart.
