Summary: This study evaluated the association between socioeconomic status (SES) factors and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A novel TNM-SES staging system was proposed, which showed superior predictive value compared to the traditional TNM stage.

Summary: The classification of lung cancer based on tumor, lymph node, and metastases has undergone several revisions since its proposal in 1966. The upcoming 9th edition is expected to combine this classification with other prognostic factors to provide a more personalized prognosis for individual patients. International collaboration is crucial in building a comprehensive database to achieve this objective.

Summary: This study investigates the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy for pathologic stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with high risk for recurrence. The results suggest that adjuvant chemotherapy may improve survival in patients with pathologic T1c or T2a or lymphovascular invasion who have high risk factors for recurrence. However, adjuvant chemotherapy does not significantly affect survival in patients without high risk factors.

Summary: Accurate staging of mediastinal lymph nodes is crucial for planning treatments for lung cancer patients. While computed tomography and positron emission tomography are commonly used for mediastinal staging, surgical techniques provide higher accuracy, especially in cases where further confirmation is needed for negative results.

Summary: This study provided external validation of the eighth edition of the TNM classification for lung cancer in Chinese patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and confirmed its improved prognostic accuracy compared with the seventh edition. The study also identified N3 and M1b as potentially heterogeneous populations that warrant further research.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of EBUS-FNA in the staging of non-small cell lung cancer and the use of EBUS alone or in combination with confirmatory mediastinoscopy. The study concludes that EBUS alone is noninferior to EBUS with confirmatory mediastinoscopy, supporting the current practice of forgoing confirmatory mediastinoscopy after negative EBUS findings.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the prognostic performance of different subclassification methods in N stage non-small-cell lung cancer. Through a retrospective analysis of a large cohort and literature review, it was found that subclassification based on the combination of lymph node location and number had better discrimination ability in prognostic evaluation.

Summary: The treatment goal for early-stage lung cancer patients is cure, with surgical resection or radiotherapy as definitive local treatments along with adjuvant therapy to improve the likelihood of cure. New therapies lag behind due to inefficient trial designs and lengthy follow-ups, despite efforts to study surrogate endpoints to shorten trial durations.

Summary: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the United States. Accurate staging is crucial for prognosis and treatment plans. The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) has made revisions to the TNM staging system used for lung cancer, including modifications to T classification, description of regional lymph node spread in N classification, and classification of metastasis in M classification.

Summary: The treatment of lung cancer is a major challenge due to its high incidence and mortality rates. Most cases are non-small cell lung cancer, with a portion being operable. Despite surgical treatment, over 50% of patients experience relapse or metastasis within 5 years.

Summary: The current guidelines recommend invasive staging for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). However, the indication for confirming a negative EBUS-TBNA result with video-assisted mediastinoscopy (VAM) before resection varies in different guidelines. This study evaluates the evidence for the added value of confirmatory VAM after a negative EBUS-TBNA result in NSCLC mediastinal staging, and finds that confirmatory VAM can reduce the rate of unforeseen N2/3 disease, but with a high number needed to treat (NNT), and should be recommended only for specific cases yet to be defined.
