Summary: The study found a tenfold decrease in DRA-related hospitalization rates from 1998 to 2018. Even in the current era of high-flux HD, serum beta 2M remains positively associated with mortality, with mortality risk increasing monotonically with increasing beta 2M levels.

Summary: Severe obesity is a relative contraindication for renal transplantation, so bariatric surgery is an important option for weight loss before kidney transplant. However, there is limited comparative data on postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) or laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) in ESRD patients on dialysis and those without renal disease.

Summary: Receiving treatment for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) was associated with a lower risk of incident dementia among older patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The beneficial effect of SHPT treatment differed by sex and race, with females and those of Asian or Black race experiencing the greatest reduction in dementia risk.

Summary: This study analyzed the coexistence of chronic liver disease (CLD) in dialysis patients and found a high prevalence of cirrhosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Hepatitis B and C were identified as risk factors for cirrhosis. However, further research is needed to understand the impact of NAFLD and NASH on cirrhosis.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of starting the transplant workup in a timely fashion for kidney transplant patients. Only 43% of patients initiated the workup before starting dialysis, and the completion time for the workup was unexpectedly long. The number of hospitalization days and language barriers were found to significantly impact the timing and duration of the transplant workup.

Summary: A study using Taiwan's NHIRD found that statin treatment did not effectively reduce cardiovascular adverse events in young adult ESRD patients aged 20-40 requiring dialysis. Patients receiving statin therapy showed higher rates of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events compared to those who did not, indicating statin therapy may not provide protective effects in this specific group.

Summary: The study showed differences in factors influencing KRT modality choice among European countries, potentially due to disparities in availability of modalities and healthcare systems. Patients in low-GDP countries received information later and were less satisfied. Most decisions were made collaboratively between patients and nephrologists.

Summary: This study compared the clinical and social characteristics of elderly and non-elderly dialysis patients, with elderly patients accounting for 29.5% of the sample, predominantly male, white, retired, and educated. They had a higher frequency of undernourishment and a lower frequency of obesity compared to non-elderly adults. The use of central venous catheter in the elderly was associated with advanced age, and their survival on dialysis was lower than non-elderly patients, with the difference increasing over time.

Summary: The study retrospectively reports on RAI treatment in thyroid cancer patients with ESRD undergoing dialysis, highlighting the challenges posed by delayed biological clearance of RAI. Adjusted dose activity and balancing scheduling between RAI therapy and dialysis are recommended to ensure closer radiation exposure in ESRD patients. Pooling data from multiple centers is suggested to establish consensus and substantiated recommendations for RAI treatment in ESRD patients.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a significant health problem in Eastern Europe, with differences in prevalence and risk factors compared to Western Europe. Interventions such as raising awareness, early detection, prevention, promoting transplantation and home dialysis, implementing guidelines, and encouraging country-specific research are important for minimizing the impact of CKD in the region. Collaboration with non-nephrology European societies and patient involvement in research are also crucial for addressing CKD-related issues effectively.
