A genetic model for Na-carbonate mineral precipitation in the Miocene Beypazari trona deposit, Ankara province, Turkey

The Miocene Beypazari trona deposit in Central Anatolia (Turkey), with estimated reserves of 250 million of tons of soda ash (sodium carbonate), is the second largest Na-carbonate deposit in the world. Petrographic observations of sodium-carbonate evaporites from basin-center cores show that the evaporites and associated minerals underwent significant early diagenetic mineral transformations in the Beypazan Basin. Trona, pirssonite and nahcolite are the major evaporite minerals, with subordinate bradleyite, shortite and thenardite. Pirssonite occurs in organic-rich muds (oil shales). Pirssonite is not a primary mineral but rather appears to have formed diagenetically from displacive gaylussite. Trona precipitated subaqueously (in lake waters) and as interstitial phase in playa muds. Nahcolite is a later diagenetic mineral replacing both trona and pirssonite beds. Evaporite minerals are closely related to pyrite in oil shales and are also associated with diagenetic silicates (Mg-rich smectites, zeolites, K-feldspar, searlesite, and idiomorphic quartz) formed by reaction of alkaline brines with pyroclastic deposits. The proposed sedimentary model involves an alkaline lake in which water depth fluctuated from deep, perennial, meromictic (stratified) stages to shallow, ephemeral, playa lake stages. Lake margin clastic deposits are absent in the center of the basin wherein Na-carbonate minerals were formed, suggesting the prevalence of a groundwater regime during drawdown events. Summary: A large amount of evaporites were deposited during the Messinian Salinity Crisis across the Mediterranean, forming a three-stage model. Researchers in the Mesaoria Basin in North Cyprus discovered MSC gypsum deposits, which can be tentatively assigned to different stages based on the lithostratigraphic gypsum succession. This study highlights the local variations in sedimentary records and raises questions about the systematic application of the traditional ‘three-stage’ lithostratigraphic model in North Cyprus and other MSC Mediterranean evaporite successions.

Redox conditions in Late Permian seawater based on trace metal ratios in fluid inclusions in halite from the Polish Zechstein Basin

Summary: Previous studies have confirmed that primary fluid inclusions in halite can record and preserve information about the major ion chemistry of seawater. In this study, the ratios of redox sensitive trace metals in primary fluid inclusions in halite from two boreholes in the Polish sector of the European Southern Permian Basin were determined. The results show that the trace metal abundances in fluid inclusions vary in response to changes in seawater redox conditions, indicating their potential as a redox proxy.

The elemental sulfur ore deposit of Salmeron: Las Minas de Hellin basin (Late Miocene, SE Spain)

Summary: This study investigates the petrological and geochemical characteristics of an elemental sulfur deposit in the Las Minas de Hellin basin in southeast Spain. The results show that elemental sulfur occurs as pseudomorphs in sedimentary gypsum and is related to calcification and silicification of sedimentary biomediated dolomite. The mineralization is considered to be formed during early diagenesis through bioepigenesis.
