Summary: The strength and plasticity of FeNiBSiNbP BMG were simultaneously improved through fluxing treatment by modulating the atomic-scale structure, leading to the formation of more ILCs and CLCs. This resulted in a stable plastic deformation process with strong interactions of multiple shear bands, thus enhancing the mechanical properties of the BMG.

Summary: In this paper, a theoretical formulation for shear transformation zone (STZ) volume, shear band density, and plasticity is presented. The temperature dependence of these parameters is discussed. The experimental data of plasticity for Vit105 bulk metallic glass show negative temperature dependence, which is consistent with the prediction of the analytical formulation.

Summary: In this study, we systematically investigate the compressive plasticity and shear band behavior of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with different Poisson's ratio and aspect ratios/contact friction coupling. Our findings demonstrate that lower contact friction and smaller aspect ratios can promote shear band distribution and improve global plasticity. We propose three stages of plastic flow in BMGs and show that the variation of plastic flow is mainly affected by aspect ratio and Poisson's ratio. We also propose a three-dimensional map of plastic flow in Zr-based BMGs reflecting the key multi-variables for shear band behavior.

Summary: This study provides strong evidence for the accumulation of structural damage in Zr-based bulk metallic glass as a result of shear strain admitted by shear bands. Analysis of shear-band structure with high-angle annular dark field transmission electron microscopy reveals scattered data with an overall trend of increasing local volume dilatation with increasing shear strain. However, locally, a variety of trends are observed, highlighting the strong heterogeneity of structural damage in shear bands in metallic glasses.

Summary: This paper investigates the temperature rise in shear bands and its effect on crystallization behavior in bulk metallic glasses. The temperature profile inside and around shear bands is determined by the released elastic energy, shear band thickness, and energy transfer time. The size of the hot zone is found to be equal to the stable crack growth region, while the size of the liquid zone is equal to the vein pattern size on the fracture surface. Crystallization occurs around hot shear bands and inside cold shear bands, but only on the compressive side of the specimen. These findings provide valuable insights into the deformation behavior of bulk metallic glasses using an analytical approach.

Summary: In-situ X-ray diffraction is used to study structural rearrangements during annealing processes in Cu44Zr-44Al8Hf2Co2 bulk metallic glass. The deformation-induced rejuvenation reveals a structural footprint that can be correlated to calorimetric signals, showing characteristics of a first-order transition for the beta-transition. Dynamic mechanical analysis data indicates that non-reversible structural rearrangements are preferentially activated during the beta-transition, while reversible deformations dominate the low-temperature alpha-transition with second-order characteristics.

Summary: Mg-Zn-Ca/SnZn bulk metallic glass composites show remarkable biocompatibility and biodegradability in human environments, making them a promising material for biodegradable implants. By introducing a non-toxic, highly plastic SnZn alloy as a second phase, the brittleness of the material at room temperature is overcome. The composites exhibit a vein-like pattern, with the SnZn alloy contributing to their plasticity and the Mg-Zn-Ca metallic glass providing strength.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between the deformation behavior and atomic-scale heterogeneity of Fe-based BMGs. It is found that as plasticity increases, the serrated flow dynamics of Fe-based BMGs transform from chaotic state to self-organized critical state. The increase in atomic-scale heterogeneity facilitates a higher frequency of interaction and multiplication of shear bands, resulting in a brittle to ductile transition in Fe-based BMGs.

Summary: A family of novel Os-Co-Ta-B high-temperature bulk metallic glasses (HTBMGs) with high glass transition temperature, Vickers microhardness, and compressive strength was fabricated by introducing high-modulus refractory metal Os and strong-covalent metalloid B. The impressive strength is attributed to the strong bond characteristics especially for Ta-Os and B-B bonds. The castable OsCo-based HTBMGs with superior mechanical properties and high thermal stabilities are significant for high-temperature applications as advanced structural materials.

Summary: This work investigates the formation of adjoining twin pairs (ATPs) at grain boundaries (GBs) in hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals, focusing on the co-nucleation (CN) of pairs of deformation twins. A continuum defect mechanics model is proposed to study the energetic feasibility of CN of ATPs resulting from GB dislocation dissociation. The model reveals that CN is preferred over the nucleation of a single twin variant for low misorientation angle GBs. Further analysis considering GB character and twin system alignment suggests that CN events could be responsible for ATP formation even at low m' values.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of electric-field induced antiferroelectric to ferroelectric (AFE-FE) phase transition and reveals the evolution of atomic displacement ordering as the cause for the transition behavior changing from sharp to diffuse. The novel semi-ordered configuration results from the competing interaction between long-range displacement modulation and compositional inhomogeneity, which leads to a diffuse AFE-FE transition while maintaining the switching field.

Summary: In this work, a physics-constrained neural network is used to predict grain-level responses in FCC material by incorporating crystal plasticity theory. The key feature, shear strain rate of slip system, is identified based on crystal plasticity and incorporated into the loss function as physical constitutive equations. The introduction of physics constraints accelerates the convergence of the neural network model and improves prediction accuracy, especially for small-scale datasets. Transfer learning is performed to capture complex in-plane deformation of crystals with any initial orientations, including cyclic loading and arbitrary non-monotonic loading.

Summary: This study attempts to address the gap in cooling rates between thin film deposition and bulk metallic glass (BMG) casting by correlating the glass-forming range (GFR) determined from combinatorial materials chips (CMCs) with the glass-forming ability (GFA) of BMG. The results show that the full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of the first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) is a good indicator of BMG GFA, and strong positive correlations between FWHM and the critical casting diameter (Dmax) are observed in various BMG systems. Furthermore, the Pearson correlation coefficients suggest possible similarities in the GFA natures of certain BMG pairs.
