Summary: The energy levels of hydrogen-like atomic systems can be calculated with great precision, which can be used to study nuclear structure. Through measuring the root-mean-square charge radius of the proton and comparing it with the value from electron scattering, it provides a benchmark for few-nucleon theories, lattice quantum chromodynamics, and electron scattering. The agreement also constrains several beyond-standard-model theories proposed to explain the proton-radius puzzle, establishing spectroscopy of light muonic atoms and ions as a precise tool for studies of nuclear properties.

Improved active fiber-based retroreflector with intensity stabilization and a polarization monitor for the near UV

Vitaly Wirthl, Lothar Maisenbacher, Johannes Weitenberg, Alexander Hertlein, Alexey Grinin, Arthur Matveev, Randolf Pohl, Theodor W. Haensch, Thomas Udem

Summary: The study introduces an improved active fiber-based retroreflector for high-quality wavefront-retracing anti-parallel laser beams in the near UV, with applications in precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen. Weak aberrations produced by the fiber collimator can be characterized through caustic measurement and limit the performance of the AFR, with implications for systems requiring collimated high-quality laser beams. Additionally, advancements in collimator design, alignment, and control have been made to stabilize the intensity of the wavefront-retracing beams and monitor polarization.

Summary: This study reports the first measurement of the average of the electron-proton and positron-proton elastic scattering cross sections, which shows that the lepton charge-averaged cross section is insensitive to the leading effects of hard two-photon exchange, providing more robust access to the proton's electromagnetic form factors. The data extracted from the OLYMPUS experiment at DESY will provide valuable constraints to future fits and offer selectivity between existing form factor global fits.

Summary: A cryogenic supersonic gas jet target has been developed for the MAGIX experiment at the high-intensity electron accelerator MESA, providing new possibilities for high-precision electron scattering experiments by utilizing different target gases. This target has proven to be well suited for a new generation of high-intensity electron accelerators.
