Soil is an essential natural resource for humans and an important part of the environment. However, soil is often used and managed inappropriately, causing its erosion and degradation, with concomitantly negative social, political and economic impacts. This study aimed to discuss sustainable development; and losses and problems caused by soil erosion, and to suggest a model for assessing erosion costs. The relevance of economic models for costing soil erosion is stressed. Based on an economic theory, it presents a procedure for assessing economic costs of soil erosion, centered on the on-site and off-site costs that are generated. The physical processes of soil erosion are described and their economic effects reviewed, drawing on theoretical and empirical sources. Limited data and information is available on the economic losses resulting from erosion, which hampers assessment and valuation.

Expansion of no-tillage practice in conservation agriculture in Brazil

Rafael Fuentes-Llanillo, Tiago Santos Telles, Dimas Soares Junior, Thadeu Rodrigues de Melo, Theodor Friedrich, Amir Kassam

Summary: Brazil has widely implemented the practice of No-Tillage, especially in soybean-based cropping systems, which have improved soil moisture conditions and generated additional growing periods. The use of No-Tillage alone is not enough for sustainability, as efforts are needed to reinforce the adoption of other ecological principles such as permanent soil mulch cover and crop diversification.

Long-term profitability of crop-livestock systems, with and without trees

Laise da Silveira Pontes, Vanderley Porfirio-da-Silva, Jose Luiz Moletta, Tiago Santos Telles

Summary: This study compared the economic profitability of two integrated systems, crop-livestock only (CL) and crop-livestock-trees (CLT), with different nitrogen fertilization levels. The results showed that crop-livestock systems perform better in terms of profit stability.

Arabica coffee yields and profitability improved by reducing the spacing within the rows

Carlos Theodoro Motta Pereira, Gustavo Hiroshi Sera, Tumoru Sera, Luciana Harumi Shigueoka, Fernando Cesar Carducci, Joao Batista Goncalves Dias da Silva, Tiago Santos Telles

Summary: This study evaluated the yield and economic performance of different plant spacings in Arabica coffee cultivars. The results showed that the cultivars had higher yields at closer plant spacings. The IPR 98 cultivar performed the best at a spacing of 0.45 m, with a yield of 7,002.60 kg/ha and a positive impact on profitability.

How soil conservation influences agricultural land prices

Tiago Santos Telles, Alexandre Gori Maia, Bastiaan Philip Reydon

Summary: Conservation practices improve soil quality and increase the value of agricultural land by increasing yields, reducing risks, simplifying management, and lowering costs. The study found that the value of land under conventional tillage is significantly lower than land under no-tillage. The economic benefits of no-tillage can be maximized when combined with other conservation practices.

Diversified crop rotations increase the yield and economic efficiency of grain production systems

Luiz Gustavo Garbelini, Henrique Debiasi, Alvadi Antonio Balbinot Junior, Julio Cezar Franchini, Antonio Eduardo Coelho, Tiago Santos Telles

Summary: Crop rotations with high plant diversity and biomass input are crucial for increasing the sustainability of grain production systems. However, low-diversity grain production systems, such as double cropping, are still prevalent in Brazil. This study aimed to assess the grain yield and profitability of different production systems with varying levels of plant diversity. The results showed that diversified crop rotation systems had higher grain yield and profitability compared to double crop systems.

Perception and level of soil and water conservation practices adoption by farmers in a watershed

Thadeu Rodrigues de Melo, Guilherme Augusto Asai, Gabriel Eiji Higashi, Ana Lucia Londero, Graziela Moraes de Cesare Barbosa, Tiago Santos Telles

Summary: This study investigated the awareness and adoption level of soil and water conservation practices among farmers in southern Brazil, and explored the relationship between the adoption level and socioeconomic characteristics. The results showed that most farmers had adequate awareness, but the adoption of conservation practices was partial, indicating a need for further improvement in soil and water conservation awareness.

Crop rotation and inoculation increase soil bradyrhizobia population, soybean grain yields, and profitability

Alisson Wilson Santos Sanzovo, Danilo Augusto Silvestre, Kelly Campos Guerra Pinheiro Goes, Bruno Volsi, Leonel Vinicius Constantino, Ivan Bordin, Tiago Santos Telles, Diva Souza Andrade

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of crop rotation and rhizobial inoculation on biological nitrogen fixation, grain yield, and profits. The results showed that inoculation with Bradyrhizobium spp. significantly increased soybean yield, especially in clayey soil. Crop rotation did not have a significant effect on soil Bradyrhizobium populations, but it did influence soybean nodulation in clayey soil.

Economic value of biological nitrogen fixation in soybean crops in Brazil

Tiago Santos Telles, Marco Antonio Nogueira, Mariangela Hungria

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the economic value of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in soybean crop in Brazil and provided methodological advances to verify the economic value of ecosystem services from BNF and carbon mitigation benefits. The results showed that BNF provides multiple ecosystem services with a high level of economic value, contributing to more sustainable agriculture.

No-tillage participatory quality index reflects the condition of soil management

Graziela Moraes de Cesare Barbosa, Thadeu Rodrigues de Melo, Andrea Scaramal Menoncin, Arnaldo Colozzi Filho, Tiago Santos Telles

Summary: This study aimed to validate the use of a no-tillage participatory quality index (PQI) as an indicator of soil management quality by evaluating its association with the physical, chemical, and microbiological attributes of soil. A survey was conducted to assess the agricultural practices of farmers from the western mesoregion of Parana, Brazil to evaluate the PQI. The results showed that the quality of soil management for annual crops was related to the PQI, as evidenced by its association with soil physical, chemical, and microbiological attributes. This confirms the usefulness of the PQI methodology for assessing soil management quality and its sensitivity to short-term changes in management practices.

Soil governance as a requirement for agricultural land conservation: a historical overview

Tiago Santos Telles, Graziela Moraes de Cesare Barbosa, Gustavo Henrique Merten, Tiago Pellini, Elizeu Jonas Didone, Maria de Fatima Guimaraes

Summary: This study provides a historical overview of land governance initiatives in Parana state, Brazil, since the 1970s. These initiatives have promoted the development of technologies for conservation practices and raised awareness about the importance of soil and water conservation in agriculture. However, there have been challenges such as the neglect of conservation practices by farmers and subsequent environmental degradation. The study proposes a new strategy for effective soil governance based on public policies and public-private partnerships.
