Empiricism in the use of nutrient solutions is frequent. Several times the same nutrient solution is used to grow different species based only on morphological similarities. This practice may lead to nutritional imbalances, affecting not only the production but also the quality of the product due to an accumulation of nitrate. An experiment under hydroponic conditions - the NFT system - was conducted with the aim of evaluating the effect of the concentration of nitrogen in the nutrient solution on the production and on the nutrient and nitrate contents of rocket (Eruca sativa) salad leaves. The experiment was carried out in spring 2003, in a randomized block design and in a 4 x 3 factorial design, with four replicates. Four nitrogen concentrations in the nutrient solution (60.8; 121.6; 182.5; 243.5 mg L-1) and three rocket salad cultivars (Cultivada, Folha Larga and Selvatica) were evaluated. Cv. Cultivada produced the tallest plants and the highest leaf fresh fitomass, not differing from cv. 'Folha Larga' in the number of leaves, leaf nitrate content, root dry fitomass and root fresh fitomass. An increment in NO3-, N, Ca and P and a reduction in Mg, K and S occurred when the concentration of N in the nutrient solution was increased. Cultivation of cv. Cultivada at the concentration of 93 mg L-1 is the most recommended as it provides the highest yield and low nitrate content.

NITROGEN RATES ON GROWTH, YIELD AND NITRATE FOLIAR CONTENT OF ARUGULA

Paulo Henrique Soares Silva, Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho, Isaias dos Santos Reis, Sergio Manuel Rugeles Reyes, Mara Cristina Pessoa Da Cruz

Summary: Moderate increase in nitrogen fertilizer benefits the growth and yield of arugula while maintaining certain quality, but excessive use may lead to high nitrate content. The research findings suggest that the optimal approach to maximize yield while minimizing nitrate content is to adjust the nitrogen fertilizer rate.

Rocket plants in response to nitrogen concentration in nutrient solution

Paulo Henrique S. Silva, Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho, Isaias dos S. Reis, Carolina S. Nascimento, Camila S. Nascimento

Summary: The study investigated the effects of nitrogen concentration on rocket vegetable growth and quality, finding that the highest nitrogen concentration led to the maximum number of leaves, leaf area, dry mass, and productivity. Additionally, the nitrate content, which indicates rocket quality, was highest at 210.2 mg L-1 of nitrogen. It is recommended to grow rocket with 237.6 mg L-1 of nitrogen in the nutrient solution for optimal results.

CHICORY AND ARUGULA IN INTERCROPPING WITH COLLARD GREENS

Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho, Maria Jose Yanez Medelo, Sara Caroline de Pontes, Camila Seno Nascimento

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of intercropping collard greens, chicory, and arugula on crop yield and land use efficiency. Despite yield losses for chicory and arugula in intercropping systems, the land use efficiency indices were greater than 1.0, indicating their viability. The highest land use efficiency index was obtained in the chicory-arugula-collard green intercropping system.

DOSES AND SPLIT NITROGEN FERTILIZER APPLICATIONS ON THE PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY OF ARUGULA

Camila Seno Nascimento, Carolina Seno Nascimento, Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho

Summary: This study found that splitting nitrogen fertilizer application can improve productivity and plant quality of arugula, while reducing the negative environmental impact caused by nitrogen losses. The application of 198 kg N ha(-1) resulted in maximum height, and nitrate content, fresh mass, and productivity increased with increasing nitrogen doses. Splitting nitrogen fertilizer applications did not affect the characteristics evaluated.

Nitrogen fertilisation impacts greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint, and agronomic responses of beet intercropped with arugula

Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho, Camila Seno Nascimento, Breno de Jesus Pereira, Carolina Seno Nascimento

Summary: This study investigates the effect of nitrogen management on the growth, production, quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon footprint of a beet-arugula intercropping system. The results show that an application of 60-120 kg N ha(-1) is the most efficient in reducing carbon footprint without compromising crop yield.

INTERCROPPING OF EGGPLANT AND TOMATO AS FUNCTION OF TIMES OF TRANSPLANT AND CROPPING SEASON

Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho, Anarlete Ursulino Alves, Vanessa Cury Galati, Francisco Bezerra Neto, Jose Carlos Barbosa, Beliza Queiroz Vieira Machado

Summary: The use of intercropping system allows crops to make better use of inputs and land productivity, benefiting farmers. This study evaluated the production performance of eggplant and industrial tomato intercropped at different transplanting dates. Results showed that the date of eggplant transplantation significantly influenced the commercial yield of both crops, with late transplanting resulting in yield losses for eggplant and higher yields for tomato. This suggests that there is a high degree of interference between these species and that the timing of eggplant transplantation can have a significant impact on production. Therefore, intercropping these crops may not be economically viable for farmers due to negative effects on growth, development, and production.

ASSESSMENT OF SUBSTRATE SOLUTION EXTRACTION METHODS FOR DETERMINATION OF CHEMICAL ATTRIBUTES IN SOILLESS CULTURE OF BELL PEPPER AND MELON

Anderson Fernando Wamser, Arthur Bernardes Cecilio Filho, Camila Seno Nascimento, Carolina Seno Nascimento, Juan Waldir Mendoza Cortez, Rodrigo Hiyoshi Dalmazzo Nowaki

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of porous ceramic cup extractors, combined with ion meters, for assessing the availability of nutrients in substrate for bell pepper and melon crops. The results showed that the concentrations of NO3- and K+ obtained using the porous ceramic cup extractors were strongly correlated with the ones obtained using the standard method. The use of these extractors could provide a fast method for evaluating the availability of nutrients in soilless cultures, especially for melon crops.
