Total lipids and fatty acid profiles were determined along the reproductive cycle of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha). A total of 33 fatty acids with carbon atoms from 14 to 22 were identified: palmitic acid (16:0) was the most abundant fatty acid (13-24%) followed by docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and palmitoleic acid (16:1n-7). Some individual fatty acids (16:0, 16:2n-4, 18:1n-7, 18:2n-6, 18:3n-4, 18:4n-3, 20:4n-3, 20:5n-3) were strongly related to reproductive events, while others having structural-type functions (18:0 and 22:6n-3) were rather stable during the study period. Multivariate analysis of the whole data set using the multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares method confirmed the strong relationship of fatty acid profiles with the reproductive cycle of zebra mussel. Additionally, the effects of the pharmaceutical clofibrate on lipid composition and fatty acid profiles were assessed following 7-day exposure of zebra mussels to a wide range of concentrations (20 ng/L to 2 mg/L). A significant reduction in total triglycerides (38%-48%) together with an increase in the amount of fatty acids per gram wet weight (1.5-to 2.2-fold) was observed in the exposed mussels. This work highlights the ability of clofibrate to induce changes on the lipidome of zebra mussels at concentrations as low as 200 ng/L. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

PLHC-1 topminnow liver cells: An alternative model to investigate the toxicity of plastic additives in the aquatic environment

Elisabet Perez-Albaladejo, Alejandra Solis, Ilaria Bani, Cinta Porte

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different plastic additives on fish lipid homeostasis using PLHC-1 cells as a model, revealing distinct modes of action and higher lipotoxicity of BADGE·2HCl and BPF compared to BPA. Bioconcentration of BADGE·2HCl, DBP, and DEHP was highest, leading to alterations in lipidome of the cells. Exposure to BPF resulted in the generation of reactive oxygen species and significant depletion of certain lipid species in the cells.

Summary: The study found that exposure to endocrine disruptors can affect lipid homeostasis in vertebrates, including fish, and fish liver cells are a potential tool for screening metabolic and lipid disruptors in aquatic environments. The results suggest that fish liver cells show sensitivity and responses to certain compounds comparable to mammalian cells, supporting their use as alternative models for detecting lipid disruptors in water environments.

Lipidomic analysis of mussel hemocytes exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics

Summary: The production and usage of plastics have significantly increased in the past decades, leading to insufficient waste management and the accumulation of plastic particles in the environment. This study focuses on the impact of polystyrene nanoparticles on the lipid composition of mussel hemocytes, showing that exposure to these particles leads to membrane reorganization and oxidation of highly unsaturated lipids. The findings suggest potential effects on the immune function of hemocytes, although further investigation is needed.

Summary: This study explored the toxicity potential of several haloacetic acids (HAAs) in water, with a focus on their effects on human cells. The results showed that iodoacetic acid (IAA) had the highest cytotoxicity and ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). These substances also caused damage to the endocrine system and genotoxicity. The findings suggest that low concentrations of these substances may have teratogenic and endocrine disruption effects on human health.

Size-resolved chemical composition and toxicity of particles released from refit operations in shipyards

Maria Lopez, Ana Lopez-Lilao, Fernando Romero, Elisabet Perez-Albaladejo, Raquel Pinteno, Cinta Porte, Aleix Balasch, Ethel Eljarrat, Mar Viana, Eliseo Monfort

Summary: Ship refit and repair operations in shipyards generate aerosol emissions with high potential for environmental impacts. This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition, organophosphate ester content, and cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of aerosol particles. The results showed that nanoparticle emissions occurred during mechanical abrading and spray-painting processes, with key components being V and Cu. Toxicity assessments revealed hazardous potential for various endpoints, including reduced cell viability, generation of reactive oxygen species, and increased genotoxicity. Although personal protective equipment and filtration systems can prevent direct human exposures, the impacts on ambient air and the aquatic environment cannot be fully prevented. Therefore, the use of good practices is encouraged to reduce inhalation exposures and mitigate the health and environmental impacts of ship refit operations.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Surya Gupta, Pasquale Borrelli, Panos Panagos, Christine Alewell

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Aluminium bioaccumulation in colon cancer, impinging on epithelial-mesenchymal-transition and cell death

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
