The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate levels of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the breast milk at 2 months postpartum, (2) to investigate the relationship between Pb and Cd levels in breast milk and some sociodemographic parameters and (3) to detect whether these levels have any influence on the infant's physical status or on postpartum depression in the mothers. Pb and Cd levels in breast milk were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The median breast milk concentrations of Pb and Cd were 20.59 and 0.67 mu g/l, respectively. In 125 (87%) of 144 samples, Pb levels were higher than the limit in breast milk reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) (>5 mu g/l). Breast milk Cd levels were >1 mu g/l in 52 (36%) mothers. The mothers with a history of anemia at any time had higher breast milk Pb levels than those without a history of anemia (21.1 versus 17.9 mu g/l; p=0.0052). The median breast milk Cd levels in active and passive smokers during pregnancy were significantly higher than in non-smokers (0.89, 0.00 mu g/l, respectively; p=0.023). The breast milk Cd levels of the mothers who did not use iron and vitamin supplements for 2 months postpartum were found to be higher than in those who did use the supplements (iron: 0.73, 0.00 mu g/l, p=0.023; vitamin: 0.78, 0.00 mu g/l, p=0.004, respectively). Breast milk Cd levels at the 2nd month were correlated negatively with the z scores of head circumference and the weight for age at birth (r=-0.257, p=0.041 and r=-0.251, p=0.026, respectively) in girls. We found no correlation between the breast milk Pb and Cd levels and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale scores. Breast milk monitoring programs should be conducted that have tested considerable numbers of women over time in view of the high levels of Pb in breast milk in this study. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Efficacy of mono- and multistrain synbiotics supplementation in modifying performance, caecal fermentation, intestinal health, meat and bone quality, and some blood biochemical indices in broilers

Sakine Yalcin, Muhammad Shazaib Ramay, Oguz Berk Gunturkun, Siddika Songul Yalcin, Ozan Ahlat, Suzan Yalcin, Mustafa Ozkaya

Summary: The present study compared the efficacy of mono- and multistrain synbiotics on broiler performance, intestinal health, meat and bone quality. The results showed that synbiotics feeding significantly improved animal performance and meat quality, and had a clear impact on the modification of small intestinal epithelia and fermentation metabolites. Both mono- and multistrain synbiotics were comparable in reducing the pathogen load. Therefore, synbiotics have the potential to be used as important feed additives in broiler diets.

Aysun Balseven-Odabasi, Mahmut Serif Yildirim, Ramazan Akcan, S. Songul Yalcin, Tolga Ince, Ali Riza Tumer, Kaya Yorganci

Summary: This study aims to investigate the specific etiological factor of child abuse and neglect, specifically related to traditional teapot- and teacup-related scalding burns in our country. Among the scalding burn cases admitted to our Burn Center, 48.6% were found to be related to the use of traditional teapots and teacups. After a detailed assessment, all these cases were considered neglect-related burns. It is important for parents, caregivers, and physicians to be aware of the potential risks associated with traditional teapots and teacups.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between fathers' reading beliefs and the media habits and book reading status of fathers and children in the preschool period. A total of 520 fathers with children aged 2-5 years were included in the study. The multivariable analysis showed that factors associated with a high parental reading scale score (HPRSS) included spending more than 3 hours with their children, not using the screen as a reward or punishment, knowing smart signs, obtaining information from a book, having screen time less than 1 hour, not using the screen alone, and engaging in other activities when not allowed to use the screen.

Trends and associated factors of bottle-feeding in Turkey: dramatic change over the last three decades under the limited implemented code

Meryem Erat Nergiz, Siddika Songuel Yalcin, Mehmet Ali Eryurt

Summary: The study analyzed data from six recent Turkey Demographic and Health Surveys to examine the trends and factors associated with bottle-feeding among children aged 0-35 months. The results showed an increasing trend of bottle-feeding from 33.0% to 51.5% between 1993 and 2013, with a slight decrease to 47.9% in 2018. Factors such as region, wealth index, maternal education, antenatal care attendance, maternal age, and birth weight were found to be associated with bottle-feeding. The study highlights the need for interventions targeting high-risk groups to reduce the low rates of bottle-feeding.

Melda Celik, Siddika Yalcin

Summary: This study investigated the understanding and selection of healthcare personnel at Ankara Hacettepe University Hospitals, Turkey, regarding social media posts that violate the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. The results showed that most social media posts held a positive attitude towards breastfeeding, but there were still posts that violated the Code. Therefore, sustainable support is needed to increase literacy among healthcare personnel about social media posts that violate the Code, especially those working at baby-friendly hospitals and those who care for breastfeeding mothers.

Evaluation of breastfeeding and infant feeding attitudes among syrian refugees in Turkey: observations of Syrian healthcare workers

Siddika Songul Yalcin, Meryem Erat Nergiz, Suzan Yalcin

Summary: This study evaluated the attitudes and practices of Syrian mothers regarding breastfeeding and infant feeding based on the observations of Syrian healthcare workers (HCWs). The results showed that while a high percentage of HCWs reported that babies were predominantly fed with breast milk in the first three days after birth, there were still some HCWs who indicated the use of sugary water as a prelacteal food and believed that breastfeeding was discontinued before 12 months. The main barriers identified by HCWs included lack of education, maternal health issues, food insecurity, low income, inadequate housing, lack of family planning, sociocultural environment, and limited access to quality health services.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Surya Gupta, Pasquale Borrelli, Panos Panagos, Christine Alewell

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
