Summary: A zwitterion is a neutral compound with both a cation and an anion. Quaternary ammonium cations are commonly used for zwitterions and are also found in biological molecules like phospholipids. Zwitterions are dielectric, non-volatile, highly polar, and have a large dipole moment, making them versatile. They have been applied as electrolyte materials for high ionic conductivity in Li-ion batteries.

Summary: The covalent attachment of 3- or 4-hydroxy benzene to the 1,3-dimethylimidazolium cation results in zwitterions, which can chemisorb and physisorb carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions. These zwitterionic solutions have low enthalpy of absorption, high adsorption capacity, and can be recycled multiple times.

Summary: This article reports a high-energy mesoionic liquid, 3-methylazasydnone, that can function as both a monopropellant and in bipropellant systems. It has high density, moderate volatility, good thermal stability, and is insensitive to impact. The computed combustion performance of the liquid propellant is superior to a benchmark energetic ionic liquid. Overall, 3-methylazasydnone is a promising functional material for green liquid mono- and bipropellants.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered to have great potential in various applications due to their unique properties, including as a liquid-based molecular self-assembly medium. Recent advances in the self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) in ILs have shown great potential for the formation of innovative materials with distinctive criteria. Self-assembled BCPs ion gels are also attracting significant interest for their outstanding tenability features without compromising the properties of ILs. Their applications in various fields such as electrochemistry, batteries, actuators, and nano-delivery vehicles have already begun to show promising results.

Summary: Ionic liquids have been identified as effective modulators of amyloid aggregation, capable of decreasing thermal stability of lysozyme and significantly accelerating fibrillization in a dose-dependent manner. Among the ILs studied, the effect of EMIM-BF4 is more prominent than EMIM-ac, leading to a higher variability in fibril morphology.

Summary: This Perspective discusses the structures of ionic liquids (ILs) and the aggregations that can significantly alter their micro-environment and impact their properties and functions. The mesoscale structures of IL aggregation in pure ILs and ILs-solvent mixtures are analyzed based on interacting forces and thermodynamics. The potential applications of IL aggregation in various scientific and engineering fields are explored, such as biomass conversion, smart materials, and life medicine. The challenges and opportunities in the field of IL aggregation, including direct observation techniques, large-scale simulations, theoretical forming mechanisms, and coupling mechanisms with solid interfaces, are also discussed. These new perspectives shed light on the rational design of ILs and generate research interest in ILs as a green medium in chemical engineering.

Summary: Ionic liquids are promising solvents for self-assembly, and the aggregation behaviors of various surfactants, especially cationic and nonionic surfactants, in ionic liquids have been studied. This work investigates the aggregation behaviors of sulfobetaine zwitterionic surfactants in the protic ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate (EAN). The study finds the formation of micellar phase, hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phase, and an additional micellar cubic lyotropic liquid crystal phase.

Summary: A series of monocationic and dicationic surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) were synthesized and characterized. The structures of SAILs were confirmed by spectral analyses of 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The relationship between the structure, surface activity, and biological action of newly SAILs on bacteria and fungi was investigated.

Summary: Zwitterionic poly(ionic liquid)-based polymer electrolytes with a network structure were prepared by ultraviolet-irradiation radical polymerization, showing high thermal stability and excellent dimensional stability. The PEGMEA provided sufficient transport sites for Li+ and a high ionic conductivity of 0.20 x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The electrolyte exhibited a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.78, and the lithium symmetric battery showed good performance with a voltage polarization of 150 mV over 600 h. The Li/LiFePO4 battery demonstrated a discharge capacity of 122 mAh g(-1), a capacity retention of 90.0% after 100 cycles, and an average Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99% at 0.1 C, indicating its potential in lithium-ion batteries.

Summary: Numerous organic reactions catalyzed by the ionic liquid product of chlorosulfonation of 1-methylimidazole have been reported recently. Controversial assumptions on the real structure of the catalyst have emerged, but it has now been confirmed to be 1-methylimidazolium chlorosulfate. This structure was verified through X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, with experiments supporting rapid hydrolysis in the presence of water traces.

Summary: This study proposes a facile ionic liquid-modulation approach for constructing two-dimensional hierarchically porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (H-ZIFs) nanosheets with tunable thickness. By tuning the anions of the ionic liquid, the structure, thickness, and pores of the nanosheets can be controlled. This strategy offers a facile approach for designing and constructing multifunctional materials with hierarchical pores.
