Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing demand to restrict the supply of fossil fuels to complement efforts in curbing demand. However, existing research on supply-side policies fails to address concerns about unmet energy needs. This paper demonstrates how the focus on energy needs has led to narratives promoting increased oil production in California, despite its climate leadership ambitions. The fossil fuel industry and its supporters have started incorporating climate concerns into pro-industry narratives, using California's stringent regulations and clean oil to portray the state as a hero protecting the climate through oil drilling. Ultimately, recognizing access to energy as a cherished value is crucial to effectively implementing supply-side policies in the future.

Summary: This study in rats found that auditory looming sound with a duration of 120 ms enhanced prepulse inhibition (PPI), showing a duration-dependent effect. Isolation rearing impaired the animal's ability to differentiate between looming and receding sounds, affecting their assessment of potential threats.

Summary: This study examines the forecasting performance of the world uncertainty index (WUI) in crude oil volatility using the popular GARCH-MIDAS model. Empirical results demonstrate that the WUI outperforms the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and geopolitical risk index (GPR). Through the encompassing test, our study provides strong evidence that the predictive content from WUI can encompass the EPU and GPR in predicting crude oil volatility.

Summary: This study found a positive association between oil prices and financial liquidity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the medium term, while geopolitical risk can cause volatility in the short term. Short-term volatility can put pressure on foreign reserves, which should be effectively managed by keeping reserves in the national currency.

Summary: In this study, we developed a computational model inspired by the looming detection circuit recently identified in Drosophila. Our results suggest that the key for accurate detection in the fly circuit is attributed to two computation strategies: population encoding and nonlinear integration. The model is further shown to be an effective algorithm for collision avoidance by virtual robot tests, shedding light on the potential of the concise fly algorithm in real-time applications.

Summary: The influence of pandemic and trade policy uncertainty on oil price returns over the past two decades is investigated using a Mixed-Frequency Vector Autoregressive (MF-VAR) model. It is found that both pandemic uncertainty and trade policy uncertainty significantly explain EU Brent and WTI oil price returns. Furthermore, pandemic and trade policy uncertainty shocks are associated with lower (higher) oil price returns in the short-term (medium-term).

Summary: This paper investigates the information spillover relationship between China's crude oil futures and the global crude oil spot markets. It finds that China's crude oil futures mainly act as a net information receiver in the global market and its influence in the international market and price discovery function needs improvement. Additionally, the paper analyzes the financial attributes of China's crude oil futures and suggests policy recommendations to promote its development.
