Summary: Despite the recent advancements in bionic upper limb prostheses, their high rejection rate is still a major concern. This article discusses the challenges and limitations of current devices and evaluates their functionality using a standard assessment method. By analyzing video footage from the 2016 and 2020 Cybathlon Powered Arm Prostheses Race, the study finds that commercially-available rigid hands perform well in dexterous grasping, while body-powered solutions are more reliable and convenient for competitive environments. The article emphasizes the importance of wrist design and control modality for successful execution of activities of daily living (ADL), and also discusses the limitations of the evaluation methodology, suggesting improvements for future assessments.
