Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that culture positivity or negativity is not associated with mortality in patients with sepsis or septic shock. Additionally, culture-positive patients had longer hospital stays and mechanical ventilation durations compared to culture-negative patients. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of culture-negative periprosthetic joint infection (CN PJI) with those of culture-positive periprosthetic joint infection (CP PJI). The results showed that patients who underwent DAIR, one-stage or two-stage revision had similar or better survival rates in the CN PJI group, indicating that negative culture was not a worse prognostic factor for PJI.

Summary: The evolution of pathogens under selective pressures in chronic infections can impact their persistence, virulence, and response to antimicrobial therapy. Genetic analysis of isolates from single infections reveals dynamic selection pathways and trade-offs between high and low Mrr1 activity, affecting drug resistance and survival traits. Such dynamic evolution within chronic infections highlights the need for a balanced approach in managing microbial populations.

Summary: The treatment of varicocele in infertility is still a controversial issue. Recent scientific evidence shows that varicocele treatment can improve semen parameters and pregnancy rates. The aim of treatment in adults is to improve current fertility status, while in adolescents, it is to prevent testicular injury and maintain future fertility. Correct indication seems to be the key to successful varicocele treatment. This study reviews and summarizes the current evidence on varicocele treatment, focusing on surgical indications in adolescents and adults, as well as other specific situations.

Summary: The research found that exposure to the natural environment has significant positive effects on human emotional well-being, including increasing positive affect and decreasing negative affect. However, there is substantial heterogeneity and risk of bias among studies, and factors such as study region, design, and sample characteristics can impact the results.

Summary: Developing methods to identify patients who may benefit from specific treatments is crucial. A recent study has established an HDAC6 score to predict how patients with breast cancer will respond to the HDAC6 inhibitor ricolinostat. The study also investigates the anti-tumor effects of the inhibitor through preclinical mechanistic work and a phase 1b clinical trial.

Summary: We evaluated clinical outcomes of patients with different test results (NAAT+/Toxin+ vs NAAT+/Toxin-) and treated or untreated cases through systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed that patients with NAAT+/Toxin+ had a higher rate of recurrence, and treatment of NAAT+/Toxin- cases was associated with lower all-cause mortality. These findings suggest the importance of treating some NAAT+/Toxin- cases.

Summary: In recent years, the incidence of overweight and obesity among military personnel has been increasing worldwide. This study examines the effectiveness of weight loss interventions and the importance of current obesity treatments in this population. The findings suggest that current interventions can effectively reduce body weight and body mass index in military populations.

Summary: According to family systems theory, family is considered an organized whole where relationships are interconnected. The meta-analytic results suggest a small positive correlation between interparental and sibling relationship quality. The percentage of male children in the sample is the only moderator affecting this correlation.

Summary: Knowledge of Candida spondylodiscitis is limited, and there is controversy regarding the most effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. This systematic review analyzed all reported cases to date and found that most patients affected by Candida spondylodiscitis were males in their sixties, with one in four being immunocompromised. Within two years of diagnosis, approximately one in five patients died, but younger age and prolonged antifungal treatment may have a protective effect.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a decellularization protocol that allows the removal of cells and myelin sheath without detrimental effects on nerve architecture. The addition of sonication to detergent-based decellularization methods was found to increase the effectiveness of removing unwanted cellular components from peripheral nerve allografts, as confirmed by histology and scanning electron microscopy.

Summary: The decellularization of bovine bone is an effective method for repairing bone defects. The new protocol used in this study successfully removed bone marrow components and cell debris, while preserving the structure of collagen fibers and extracellular matrix. However, the decellularized bovine bone showed moderate toxicity.

Summary: This study analyzed the incidence density trend of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria and antimicrobial consumption in 99 critical care facilities in a low/middle-income country. The findings showed an increase in the incidence density of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) in 2020, which was strongly correlated with the incidence density of COVID-19. There was also an increase in polymyxin consumption in 2020, but it was not significantly correlated with CRAB or COVID-19 incidence density, likely due to empirical and untargeted prescribing.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors associated with the presence of P. aeruginosa, as well as the risk factors related to the recurrence and death of lower airway infections in inpatients. The results showed that previous pulmonary disease was associated with colonization by P. aeruginosa. Aminoglycosides were the most effective drugs in susceptibility tests and were successfully used as monotherapy. Septic shock was a risk factor for death in infected patients. The use of adequate antimicrobial therapy was associated with increased survival, regardless of the infection classification.

Summary: The use of contact lenses has increased the risk of microbial keratitis. This study tested the effectiveness of 14 multipurpose contact lens solutions against bacterial and fungal biofilms. The results showed that only five solutions had a significant effect on bacterial biofilms, while none were able to eradicate fungal biofilms. In conclusion, multipurpose contact lens solutions have better bactericidal activity against planktonic cells than biofilms.

Summary: This study describes a case of severe S. clavata infection in a Brazilian children's hospital, including characterization of antifungal minimal inhibitory concentration, S. clavata biofilm, and molecular features. The study found that S. clavata can form biofilms and is sensitive to certain antifungal drugs. These findings are important for the development of novel treatments, especially for biofilm-associated infections.
