Summary: Water deficit inhibits plant growth and leads to overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress. Iodine (I) has been shown to enhance the antioxidant defense system and improve photosynthesis under adverse conditions. In this study, soybean plants exposed to potassium iodide (KI) concentrations of 10 and 20 .mol L-1 showed increased biomass, improved gas exchange, and reduced lipid peroxidation under water deficit. However, higher KI concentrations negatively affected photosynthetic efficiency, biomass accumulation, and partition under well-irrigated conditions.

Summary: The tomato crop is vulnerable to different types of stress, including the phytopathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. Graphene-Cu nanocomposites have shown positive effects on tomato plants infected with Fusarium oxysporum, including delaying the incidence of vascular wilt disease, increasing photosynthetic pigments, and improving the antioxidant defense system. Furthermore, graphene functionalization enhances the effectiveness of the nanocomposites. The plants treated with the Graphene-Cu nanocomposite exhibited better responses to biotic stress in terms of water potential and the efficiency of photosystem II.

Electrochemical methods provide promising tools for evaluating antioxidant properties in medicinal plants. These methods allow for the determination of total antioxidant parameters, individual antioxidant quantification, and studying the mechanisms of antioxidant actions. Additionally, chemically modified electrodes can be used for the electrochemical detection of antioxidants in medicinal plants, either individually or simultaneously.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of arsenic (As) contamination on tomato plants and the potential use of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) to mitigate this effect. The results show that higher concentrations of As in irrigation water lead to greater uptake and translocation of As in tomato plants. However, the application of Si NPs reduces As translocation and tomato yield. The increased production of photosynthetic pigments and improved enzymatic activity suggest that Si NPs can help tomato plants adapt to high concentrations of As.

Summary: Arsenic (As) accumulation in the food chain has raised global concern. This study investigated the role of the antioxidant system, particularly glutathione (GSH) metabolism, in peanut roots inoculated with Bradyrhizobium sp. strains showing varying tolerance to arsenic (As). Results showed that the strain modulated the activity of arsenate reductase (AR) differently and affected several enzymatic activities and gene expressions related to the antioxidant system. It was concluded that glutathione plays a fundamental role in metalloid detoxification and can serve as a biomarker of arsenic contamination in crops.
