A clinical audit of pneumococcal vaccination among patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases living in Greece: The power of awareness

Costas A. Constantinou, Dimitrios C. Ziogas, Aliki Venetsanopoulou, Maria N. Gamaletsou, Loukia Koutsogeorgopoulou, Anastasia Barbouni, Athanasios G. Tzioufas, Nikolaos Sipsas

Summary: The pneumococcal vaccination rate among patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases in Greece is suboptimal, with only 49.37% receiving the vaccine. Factors influencing vaccine uptake include patient age and awareness of the reasons for vaccination, while lack of recommendation by physicians is the main reason for non-vaccination.

Stergiou, Konstantinos Kambas, Aikaterini Poulaki, Stavroula Giannouli, Theodora Katsila, Aglaia Dimitrakopoulou, Veroniki Vidali, Vasileios Mouchtouris, Ismini Kloukina, Evangelia Xingi, Stamatis N. Pagakis, Lesley Probert, George P. Patrinos, Konstantinos Ritis, Athanasios G. Tzioufas, Michael Voulgarelis

Summary: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) involve a group of disorders affecting hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, with a particular focus on the role of the transcription factor HIF-1. Aberrant HIF-1 stabilization and pseudohypoxia are prominent features in MDS pathobiology, showing potential for therapeutic manipulation in benign cases.

Lipoprotein-Associated Phospholipase A2: A Novel Contributor in Sjogren's Syndrome-Related Lymphoma?

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the contributory role of Lp-PLA2 in B-NHL development in primary SS patients. Results showed that serum Lp-PLA2 activity was significantly increased in SS-L patients, and Lp-PLA2 expression in MSG tissues was also higher in SS-L patients compared to SS-nL patients and healthy controls. These findings suggest that Lp-PLA2 could potentially serve as a new biomarker and therapeutic target for B-cell lymphoproliferation in the context of SS.

Aimilios Kaklamanos, Konstantinos Belogiannis, Panagiotis Skendros, Vassilis G. G. Gorgoulis, Panayiotis G. G. Vlachoyiannopoulos, Athanasios G. G. Tzioufas

Summary: COVID-19 pathophysiology is largely influenced by immune deregulation, resulting in various severe consequences such as immune system malfunction, endothelial activation and inflammation, as well as immunothrombosis. These insights could potentially offer new opportunities in disease prevention and treatment.

Serum, but Not Saliva, CXCL13 Levels Associate With Infiltrating CXCL13+Cells in the Minor Salivary Gland Lesions and Other Histologic Parameters in Patients With Sjogren's Syndrome

Loukas Chatzis, Andreas Goules, Ioanna E. Stergiou, Michael Voulgarelis, Athanasios G. Tzioufas, Efstathia K. Kapsogeorgou

Summary: Recent studies have shown that elevated CXCL13 serum levels are associated with histologic features, disease severity and NHL risk in pSS patients, while saliva levels have limited discriminative value. Serum CXCL13 levels are positively correlated with CXCL13+-cell number and biopsy focus-score, indicating a potential role in disease severity and NHL development.

Summary: This article presents the HarmonicSS cloud computing exemplar platform, which provides state-of-the-art data analytics services to address the clinical unmet needs of primary Sjogren's Syndrome (pSS). The platform successfully develops lymphoma classification models and identifies biomarkers for lymphomagenesis by interlinking, curating, and harmonizing multiple regional and international databases. The federated AI algorithms trained on the harmonized databases yield robust lymphoma classification models with high accuracy and identify 5 biomarkers for lymphoma development.

COVID-19: Clinical features and outcomes in unvaccinated 2-dose and 3-dose vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 patients with systemic autoimmune and autoinflammatory rheumatic diseases

Athanasios-Dimitrios Bakasis, Clio P. Mavragani, Paraskevi V. Voulgari, Nafsika Gerolymatou, Ourania D. Argyropoulou, Panayiotis G. Vlachoyiannopoulos, Fotini N. Skopouli, Athanasios G. Tzioufas, Haralampos M. Moutsopoulos

Summary: This observational study reports the clinical features and outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with systemic autoimmune and autoinflammatory rheumatic diseases (SAARD) who were unvaccinated or received 2 or 3 doses of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. The study found that vaccination with 2 or 3 doses significantly reduced hospitalizations and the need for oxygen supplementation in COVID-19 patients with SAARD. Furthermore, the study showed that receiving 3 doses of the vaccine was associated with a significantly lower risk of severe/critical COVID-19.

Liver Fibrosis in Primary Sjogren's Syndrome

Theodoros Androutsakos, Theodoros A. Voulgaris, Athanasios-Dimitrios Bakasis, Maria-Loukia Koutsompina, Loukas Chatzis, Ourania D. Argyropoulou, Vasilis Pezoulas, Dimitrios I. Fotiadis, George Papatheodoridis, Athanasios G. Tzioufas, Andreas V. Goules

Summary: This study explored the occurrence of liver fibrosis (LF) in primary Sjogren syndrome (pSS) patients in the context of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed that pSS patients had a lower prevalence of liver steatosis and significant liver fibrosis compared to the comparators. Advanced LF was significantly associated with older age, higher LS, greater BMI, and disease status, with age being identified as an independent LF risk factor.
