Summary: This study found that patients with ankylosing spondylitis are more likely to develop hip fractures earlier and more frequently compared to a matched cohort. It suggests that these patients might benefit from more proactive screening, mitigation, and prevention of risk factors for hip fractures.

Summary: This study compared the clinical data of AS patients who underwent unilateral and bilateral THA due to hip involvement, showing that bilateral THA is more common in AS patients with advanced hip involvement. Risk factors associated with bilateral THA include bilateral onset, a BASRI-hip score of 4, and a higher ESR level, while anti-TNF therapy acts as a protective factor against bilateral THA.

Summary: The study confirmed the reliability and validity of HIMRISS in assessing hip involvement in AS patients. It showed moderate correlations between HIMRISS and BASDAI, BASFI, ASDAS-ESR, and ASDAS-CRP, and significant differences in HIMRISS scores between patients with mild and advanced hip involvement.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the frequency and factors associated with acute anterior uveitis (AAU) in different forms of Spondyloarthritis (SpA) in a large Turkish cohort. It was found that older age, smoking history, delayed diagnosis, longer disease duration, arthritis, positive HLA-B27, family history of SpA, and radiographic damage were associated with a higher prevalence of uveitis in SpA patients. Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patients had a lower prevalence of uveitis. Early detection of uveitis can aid in the diagnosis of SpA.

Summary: The risk of instantaneous death is relatively high in patients with AS and cervical fracture, especially in the first 6 months. However, this risk gradually decreases over time. Delayed surgery is associated with a decreased incidence of complications. Patients with ASIA A and B demonstrate improved conditional survival over time.

Summary: Hip involvement in ankylosing spondylitis is associated with functional impairment, and early diagnosis can improve prognosis. This study investigated the relationship between gluteal muscle parameters and hip involvement in patients with AS. The results showed that AS patients had lower gluteal muscle CSA than controls, and the severity of hip involvement was negatively associated with muscle parameters. Computed tomography may be more sensitive than radiographs in assessing muscle parameters.

Summary: This study aims to identify the risk factors for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) during perinatal and early life, while controlling for family-shared confounding using a sibling comparison design. The study found that having older siblings and a history of tonsillectomy in childhood were independently associated with the development of AS, even after adjusting for family-shared factors in a sibling comparison analysis.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed clinical and surgical-related factors in 52 patients with increased BASRI-h scores and 78 patients with maintained BASRI-h scores. The results showed that earlier onset of AS, longer kyphotic duration, larger preoperative global kyphosis, sacral fixation during surgery, and larger anterior pelvic plane angle during follow-up were independent risk factors for hip joint structural changes in AS patients undergoing PSO.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and risk factors for allogeneic blood transfusion in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) undergoing primary unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA). The results showed that prolonged operative duration, increased estimated intraoperative blood loss, and increased postoperative drainage volume were risk factors for transfusion, while a higher body mass index, perioperative tranexamic acid use, and a higher preoperative hemoglobin level were protective factors.

Summary: The aim of the study was to propose strategies to improve the initial assessment and follow-up of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in Spain. A survey among expert rheumatologists in Spain was conducted, and a total of 108 strategies were proposed, including assessment of quality of life and disease-impact indices, comorbidities and extra-articular manifestations, laboratory tests, imaging tests, etc. Overall, these strategies are applicable to the entire country and are of significant importance in meeting the needs of PsA patients and ensuring optimal follow-up.

Summary: Objective. The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic interventions for treatment of axial disease in PsA. Methods. This systematic review updated the treatment recommendations for axial PsA. Results. The literature review revealed that new biologic and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug classes could be considered for the treatment of axial PsA. Conclusion. Further studies are needed for a better understanding of the treatment of axial PsA.

Summary: Climate change-induced bleaching events have become increasingly common in coral reefs. While direct impacts have received attention, the indirect impacts, such as trophic interactions, have been largely overlooked. To address this research gap, the model predator-prey pair of Berghia stephanieae and Exaiptasia diaphana is advocated for studying the trophic effects of bleaching. These organisms are already used in other research fields, allowing for the utilization of existing knowledge on their physiology and culture protocols. The use of this model pair can help unravel the long-term prevalence of trophic effects in coral reef communities.

Summary: Osteomalacia is a series of disorders characterized by altered mineralization of the skeleton, which can be caused by various genetic or acquired disorders, including nutritional deficiencies. It is important to differentiate osteomalacia from other bone diseases to avoid misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment. Clinicians should be aware of the subtle manifestations and radiological features of osteomalacia, and consider it as a possible cause of therapeutic failures in patients with other bone diseases.

Summary: This study analyzed the prescribing practices and extent of shared decision-making (SDM) in Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) across Europe. The results showed higher disease activity and treatment escalation rates in the UK, and effective implementation of SDM in face-to-face PsA consultations. Moreover, treatment escalation was only observed in patients with mild disease activity and higher perceived collaboration.
