Summary: Non-medicinal therapies using water, salts, exercise, massage, supportive devices, and electricity have been used for centuries to benefit individuals with musculoskeletal disorders. The development of various medications, including morphine-derived products, acetyl salicylic acid, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, paracetamol, corticosteroids, and biologics, has significantly advanced joint pain management. The main objectives of managing musculoskeletal pain are to reduce or eliminate joint pain, improve joint function and mobility, enhance muscle strength, and prevent damage to joint cartilage and supporting structures.

Summary: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is still a significant global cardiovascular burden, although it is no longer common in wealthy countries. Centuries of history have given us a thorough understanding of RHD's pathophysiology. Infections caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) trigger an immune response that leads to inflammation and cardiac dysfunction. Myocardial fibrosis, which is prevalent in RHD patients, can be used to determine treatment options and predict intervention outcomes.

Summary: To provide customized pain science education, it is necessary to assess children's biopsychosocial pain concepts. A new tool, the biopsychosocial pain concept matrix (BiPS matrix), is introduced to assess children's pain concepts in five domains. The preliminary study assesses the readability and understandability of the items in cognitive interviews with healthy children and pre-tests the BiPS matrix with an online survey. The results reveal difficulties in understanding some items, with children's understanding increasing with age. Age, chronic pain status, and pain in the social environment are positively associated with the overall pain concept score.

Summary: With the increasing number of reports on post-acute COVID-19 musculoskeletal manifestations, it is crucial to summarize the available literature in order to gain a better understanding of this new and not fully understood phenomenon. In this systematic review, 54 original papers were included to provide an updated picture of post-acute COVID-19 musculoskeletal manifestations, particularly focusing on joint pain, new-onset rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases, and the presence of autoantibodies related to inflammatory arthritis. The findings highlighted the frequent occurrence of rheumatological symptoms after COVID-19, suggesting the potential role of SARS-CoV-2 as a trigger for autoimmune conditions and rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases.

Summary: The study revealed significantly higher rates of initial hospitalizations and deaths related to acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease among Maori and Pacific Island population groups compared to European/other ethnicity in New Zealand. Rates were also found to be higher in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, highlighting the importance of addressing social and ethnic inequalities to reduce the burden of these diseases.

Summary: The study found that being older, female, non-Caucasian, and having lower education was associated with worse pain in early and/or long-standing IRDs, despite universally accessible health care. Early identification of at-risk populations and implementation of multidisciplinary strategies may reduce patient-reported health outcome disparities.

Summary: Total knee arthroplasty is an effective treatment for severe osteoarthritis, but up to 20% of patients may remain dissatisfied. New technologies in TKA, such as patient-specific instruments, customized implants, sensors, accelerometers, and robotic-assisted systems, offer advantages but also limitations.

Summary: This study provides an initial evaluation of a new measure of chronic pain beliefs, the pain concepts questionnaire (PCQ), within a low-SES population. The psychometric properties of the PCQ were found to be promising and could be useful in pain assessment and interventions. These results highlight the importance of pain beliefs in chronic pain management and the need for further research in this area.

Summary: Joint pain and arthralgia can be symptoms of COVID-19, and there is evidence suggesting a possible relationship between the virus and the development of inflammatory arthritis. Viral infections and rheumatic diseases have documented associations, and they share genetic and environmental risk factors. The interaction between viruses and the immune system plays a role in the development of rheumatic diseases, and infections may contribute to autoimmune rheumatic diseases and patient mortality. Therefore, understanding the interaction between viral infections and rheumatic diseases is crucial.

Summary: This article discusses the prevalence, efficacy, and safety of opioid analgesics in patients with rheumatic diseases. Recent studies show long-term opioid use is common in patients with inflammatory rheumatic disease, but there is no evidence to support its efficacy in pain control and function improvement. Some data shows potential adverse effects including increased risk for fractures and opioid poisoning hospitalizations.
