Summary: This study evaluated the association between a school-based screening and brief intervention (SBI) program and substance use among youths. The results showed that exposure to the SBI program was associated with a smaller increase in cannabis use among middle school students. These findings suggest that implementing SBI programs in schools may help reduce substance use among adolescents.

Summary: As rates of prenatal cannabis use increase and cannabis legalization spreads across the US, this qualitative study aimed to understand pregnant individuals' perspectives on the legalization of cannabis for adult use in California. The findings suggest that legalization has made it easier for pregnant individuals to access cannabis, reduced stigma, and encouraged discussions about prenatal cannabis use with healthcare practitioners. However, opinions regarding the impact of retailer marketing, advertising, and concerns about Child Protective Services involvement varied.

Summary: A study evaluated compliance of cannabis-licensed firms with the Cannabis Act and analyzed trends in violations regarding promotional material. Widespread violations were observed in online Canadian cannabis promotion, suggesting the need for explicit federal regulation and enforcement to protect public health and safety amid legalization. The impact of policy and enforcement of cannabis promotion in Canada would also have international implications due to the global outreach of online media.

Summary: Prenatal cannabis use is associated with health risks for mothers and their children. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in prenatal cannabis use, particularly among individuals living close to cannabis retail stores. Continued monitoring of local cannabis policy, the retail environment, and prenatal cannabis use is necessary.

Summary: This study tested the feasibility and acceptability of using social media to identify at-risk community college students and deliver the BASICS intervention. Findings showed that a significant number of students displayed problem alcohol use on social media, and the majority of participants had a positive attitude towards the intervention. This demonstrates the feasibility of web-based interventions to reach community college populations.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a brief geriatric assessment (BGA) tool for general practitioners to evaluate geriatric syndromes in community-dwelling older adults. The proposed BGA included tests for physical function, cognitive impairment, mood impairment, and sensory impairment, providing a comprehensive evaluation. The BGA was found to be practical, taking less than 10 minutes and suitable for use in community settings, demonstrating its potential for early management of geriatric syndromes.

Summary: The study found that delaying the age of first alcohol and cannabis use by one year reduced the likelihood of being a current cannabis user. Among current users, older age at first tobacco and cannabis use was associated with lower frequency of cannabis use in the last 30 days. Analysis of participants aged 15-34 showed that delaying the onset of tobacco and cannabis use by each year reduced the odds of having a cannabis use disorder.

Summary: Research indicates that during the COVID-19 lockdown, there was a decrease in cannabis consumption, with some individuals either stopping or starting to use the drug. Cannabis users expressed less satisfaction with government measures, more concern about the impact of the pandemic on the economy and their career, and higher levels of fear of infection in public areas.

Summary: The results of the study show that practitioners' beliefs were reflective of the current social norms around alcohol use and this influenced their decision to offer a brief alcohol intervention. Future interventions need to emphasize both organizational and sociocultural factors as part of the design. The results of this study point to the need to change social norms regarding alcohol in order to effectively implement interventions that target both alcohol and tobacco use in primary care clinics.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of three brief substance use screening tools (S2BI, BSTAD, TAPS) among adolescents aged 12 to 17 years. The results showed that screening tools utilizing questions on past-year frequency of use were effective in identifying adolescents with substance use disorders.

Summary: Alcohol-attributable mortality contributes to health inequalities, and addressing hazardous alcohol use through alcohol screening and brief intervention is a promising strategy to improve health equity. Socioeconomic disparities exist in accessing healthcare, receiving alcohol screenings, and receiving brief interventions, with low-income individuals facing more challenges. While alcohol screening coverage is generally low, those with low socioeconomic status are more likely to receive brief interventions and benefit from them, leading to reductions in alcohol use. Achieving universal access to healthcare and high coverage of alcohol screenings can enhance health equity by reducing alcohol consumption and related health harms.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the timing and frequency of cannabis use in adolescence. The findings showed that individuals with 4 or more ACEs, particularly those with parental substance use or abuse, were at a higher risk of problematic adolescent cannabis use. Therefore, reducing ACEs may help reduce cannabis use among adolescents.
