Myrcia uniflora Barb. Rodr., Myrtaceae, popularly known as pedra-hume-caa in Brazil, is sold as dry extracts in capsules or as tinctures for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Previous phytochemical studies on this species described the occurrence of the flavonoids mearnsitrin and myricitrin. In the present study, the chromatographic profiles of M. uniflora leaves and commercial extracts were determined using HPLC-PAD. Myricitrin was used as an external standard in the development and validation of the HPLC method. The proposed method is simple, rapid and reliable and can be successfully applied in industry for standardization of herbs and phytomedicines commercialised in Brazil as pedra-hume-caa.

Reaction of the Phytochemistry Community to Green Chemistry: Insights Obtained Since 1990

Cristiano S. Funari, Daniel Rinaldo, Vanderlan S. Bolzani, Robert Verpoorte

Summary: This review article investigates the response of phytochemists to green chemistry insights since the launch of the Pollution Prevention Act in 1990. Highly cited phytochemistry papers from each year between 1990 and 2019 were sampled to assess the greenness of experimental procedures, particularly regarding the use of solvents. Progress in sustainability was observed in the extraction stage, but not in purification procedures, where hazardous solvents like chloroform and dichloromethane were still commonly used. Potential alternative approaches for more sustainable purification procedures are discussed, along with initiatives for a broader sustainable phytochemical research.

Danubia Aparecida Costa Nobre, Rodrigo Rocha Silva, Vinicius Guimaraes Nasser, Geraldo Humberto Silva, Leonardo Angelo Aquino, Willian Macedo

Summary: This study examines the interactions between plant physiology and seed chemical composition of soybean cultivars under different spatial arrangements. Two soybean cultivars were grown in four different arrangements, and the gas exchange, seed quality, and chemical composition were analyzed. The results showed that the layout with 40.0 cm between rows and 8.9 cm between plants was optimal for Tec 7849 Ipro, while the layout with 50.0 cm between rows and 5.3 cm between plants was ideal for Monsoy 6972 Ipro.

Old Meets New: Mass Spectrometry-Based Untargeted Metabolomics Reveals Unusual Larvicidal Nitropropanoyl Glycosides from the Leaves of Heteropterys umbellata

Helena Mannochio-Russo, Wilhan D. G. Nunes, Rafael F. Almeida, Lorena C. Albernaz, Laila S. Espindola, Vanderlan S. Bolzani

Summary: This study investigated secondary metabolites with larvicidal activity from the Malpighiaceae taxon using metabolomic and bioactivity-based methods. The results revealed significant differences in the metabolic profiles of different plant organs and collection sites. By employing a bioguided approach, three larvicidal compounds were isolated. These findings support the use of metabolomic-guided approaches in combination with classical phytochemical techniques for the search of natural larvicidal compounds for vector control.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxicity of essential oils from plants of the Annona neolaurifolia, Duguetia lanceolata, and Xylopia brasiliensis species on the fall armyworm (FAW) and its natural enemy, Trichogramma pretiosum. The essential oils from the leaves and stem bark of Duguetia lanceolata were the most effective against FAW, and they contained beta-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide as major compounds that reduced the insect's survival probability. Additionally, the essential oil from Duguetia lanceolata leaves showed low toxicity to the egg-larva stage of Trichogramma pretiosum, suggesting its potential for controlling FAW.

Nematostatic activity of isoprenylated guanidine alkaloids from Pterogyne nitens and their interaction with acetylcholinesterase

Aline Coqueiro, Daniara Cristina Fernandes, Amanda Danuello, Luis Octavio Regasini, Elaine Monteiro Cardoso-Lopes, Maria Claudia Marx Young, Luce Maria Brandao Torres, Vicente Paulo Campos, Dulce Helena Siqueira Silva, Vanderlan da Silva Bolzani, Denilson Ferreira de Oliveira

Summary: Although new nematicides have emerged, there is still high demand for less toxic and more efficient products to control plant-parasitic nematodes. As a result, increased research on natural secondary metabolites from plants to develop new nematicides has been observed. In this study, extracts from eleven Brazilian plant species were screened, and the extract from Piterogyne nitens showed potent nematostatic activity. The alkaloid fraction obtained from the ethanol extract of P. nitens was more active, and three isoprenylated guanidine alkaloids isolated from this fraction showed similar activity, indicating their potential for the development of new products to control Meloidogyne incognita.

Advanced Glycation End Products Inhibitors from Talisia esculenta

Natalia Felix Alves, Dayane Castro Ribeiro, Helena Mannochio-Russo, Suzana Aparecida Silva Queiroz, Guilherme Juliao Zocolo, Vanderlan da Silva Bolzani, Marilia Valli

Summary: Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) are compounds formed during hyperglycemic conditions and aging, and are associated with skin aging, loss of elasticity, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's. Herbal supplements have been shown to have beneficial effects on glycemic control and oxidative stress, reducing the formation of AGEs. This study investigated natural compounds from Talisia esculenta with antiglycation activity, and identified rutin and quercitrin as compounds with significant antiglycation activity. These findings suggest the potential use of these natural compounds as AGEs inhibitors in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
