Summary: This review aims to elucidate the possible origins of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) by examining in vivo and in vitro models compared to clinical cases. It pays particular attention to histologic alterations and molecular cascades. Although the mechanisms are still partially obscure, experimental models are progressively enhancing our understanding of neovascularization etiology.

Summary: This retrospective study on choroidal osteoma aimed to report complications, treatments, and visual prognosis. Findings revealed that choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and subretinal fluid were the main visually significant complications, with intravitreal anti-VEGF injection being the common treatment choice. Results showed that the presence of CNV and outer retinal tubulation (ORT) were independent risk factors for vision loss, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups and appropriate treatment options for better visual outcomes.

Summary: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Current treatments have limited efficacy and require frequent injections. This study explores a gene therapy that targets pathological angiogenesis through a VEGF-independent mechanism and shows promising results in a mouse model. Anti-Scg3 gene therapy has the potential to be used alone or in combination with anti-VEGF therapy to treat nAMD.

Summary: This study aims to report the very long-term visual prognosis of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) complicating angioid streaks in the antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) era. The results show that despite the use of antivascular endothelial growth factor agents, the very long-term prognosis appeared relatively poor, especially in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE).

Summary: This study developed an in situ verteporfin delivery system with a photoswitching synergistic function for occluding choroidal neovasculature. The system effectively performs verteporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy under light-on conditions and negatively regulates angiogenesis under light-off conditions. It improves the bioavailability of verteporfin and provides a promising strategy for the treatment of choroidal vascular diseases with synergistic antiangiogenic effects.

Summary: This study is the first network meta-analysis comparing all treatment modalities for myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV). The results confirm that anti-VEGF is the most effective treatment, and using the 1 + PRN treatment strategy can lead to better visual outcomes.

Summary: This study summarized the features of perforating scleral vessels (PSVs) in patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) using OCTA, and identified the associations with the response after intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy. The eyes with PSVs adjacent to mCNV showed poor therapeutic responses after intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy.

Summary: This study reported a near-infrared photosensitizer BDP2 with good water solubility, long wavelength excitation, and high ROS quantum yield, which could induce cell apoptosis by changing mitochondrial morphology and fusion protein level. Furthermore, BDP2 photosensitizer could inhibit choroidal neovascularization.

Summary: This study found that anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy can lead to changes in the complement system in eyes with age-related choroidal neovascularization (CNV), including significant increases in C3a and C4a levels. However, these changes did not impact visual outcomes in the eyes with CNV.

Summary: Short-term therapeutic efficacy of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab (IVB) for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) varies based on the presence of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), with better outcomes seen in patients with CNV. In patients with chronic CSC and CNV, better short-term visual outcomes after IVB were associated with a thinner choroid and smaller pachyvessels.

Summary: Aflibercept biosimilars have the potential to expand treatment options in retinal diseases and improve patient access to safe and effective therapy. A phase 3 trial showed that SB15 and reference aflibercept (AFL) had equivalent efficacy and comparable safety, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

Summary: This case report presents a 40-year-old woman diagnosed with choroidal osteoma in the right eye, complicated by secondary choroidal neovascularization. Treatment with 3 injections of intravitreal ranibizumab led to improved visual acuity and regression of the neovascularization after 1 year of follow-up. Optical coherence tomography angiography combined with other imaging techniques provided unique insights into the vascular changes associated with choroidal neovascularization in choroidal osteoma.

Summary: The study used SS-OCT and SS-OCTA to observe the intrinsic features of osteoma in 23 eyes of 21 patients, finding that the borders of CO were clearly demarcated from the adjacent choroidal Sattler's and Haller's layers, and the blood flow of the CO was mainly within the choriocapillaries on the corresponding B-scan.
