The regulatory mechanisms underlying myometrial smooth muscle contractility during labor are poorly understood. The authors therefore investigated the transcriptional profile of the charges that occur in the human myometrium at term pregnancy when compared with that at labor. Microarray technology was used to identify differentially expressed genes in human myometrium at labor. Real-time fluorescence reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was subsequently performed to verify the microarray data. Semiquantitative RT-PCR, Western blotting, and microscopy methodologies were also used. Certain novel genes were found to be upregulated in human myometrium at labor. Of these, PSCDBP, TLR2, TWIST1, FLJ35382, and RGS12 have not been previously characterized or identified in human myometrium. EDNRB is the other novel labor-associated gene whose reported expression is also upregulated at labor. All 6 genes were expressed on human myometrial smooth muscle cells. These novel upregulated genes are involved in multiple pathways that may be associated with a variety of cellular processes including inflammation, transcriptional regulation, and intracellular signaling.

Young children's lives in East London through the pandemic: Relationships, activities and social worlds

Claire Cameron, Hanan Hauari, Katie Hollingworth, Margaret O'Brien, Lydia Whitaker

Summary: This paper examines the daily lives and activities of young children in one East London borough during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through qualitative interviews with parents, it was found that some children had more time and new activities with their parents, while others, particularly those in low-income households and crowded accommodation, experienced significant reductions in their relationships, social participation, and activities.

Income, ethnic diversity and family life in East London during the first wave of the pandemic: an assets approach

Claire Cameron, Margaret O'Brien, Lydia Whitaker, Katie Hollingworth, Hanan Hauari

Summary: This paper presents the results of a survey conducted on parents and parents to be in an ethnically diverse and socio-economically unequal borough of East London during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that while material assets were often insecure and in decline, familial assets were largely sustained, and community assets were less accessible or had changed means of access. The study also highlighted the importance of income and couple relationships in mitigating the adverse impacts on mental health during the pandemic. Supporting family assets and enhancing access to community assets are crucial for addressing the challenges faced by families during such crises.

When Does Expanded Eligibility Translate into Increased Take-Up? An Examination of Parental Leave Policy in Luxembourg

Merve Uzunalioglu, Marie Valentova, Margaret O'Brien, Anne-Sophie Genevois

Summary: This article explores the impact of a parental leave policy reform in Luxembourg on the take-up of parental leave by marginal part-time working parents. The study found that relaxing eligibility criteria resulted in significantly more leave take-up by mothers, while the impact on fathers was limited. Additionally, it was discovered that foreign national parents were less likely to be eligible for parental leave and had lower take-up rates.
