Effect of Endometrial Sampling Procedures on Subsequent Pregnancy Rate of Cattle

Orlando Ramirez-Garzon, Ricardo Soares Magalhaes, Nana Satake, Jonathan Hill, Claudia Jimenez, Michael K. Holland, Michael McGowan

Summary: The study found that conducting endometrial sampling procedures before breeding or shortly after insemination does not adversely affect pregnancy rates in cattle, and can be used to accurately identify cattle with a normal endometrium. Further studies are needed to validate these findings.

Investigation of cattle plasma proteome in response to pain and inflammation using next generation proteomics technique, SWATH-MS

Priya Ghodasara, Nana Satake, Pawel Sadowski, Steven Kopp, Paul C. Mills

Summary: This study utilized a modern mass spectrometry technique to identify significant changes in protein concentrations in cattle at 24 and 96 hours post-surgical injury, indicating candidate biomarkers associated with stress, wound healing, immune response, blood coagulation, and inflammation. These biomarkers provide a more objective assessment of animal responses to tissue injury-induced pain and inflammation.

Cryo-scanning electron microscopy demonstrates that ice morphology is not associated with the post-thaw survival of domestic boar (Sus domesticus) spermatozoa: A comparison of directional and conventional freezing methods

James D. Gillis, William V. V. Holt, Linda M. Penfold, Kathryn J. Woad, James K. Graham, Julie A. Watts, David S. Gardner, Lisa Yon

Summary: The effect of ice morphology on the post-thaw survival of domestic boar spermatozoa cryopreserved in 0.5 ml straws was investigated. The study found that ice morphology had little impact on post-thaw sperm survival, and there was no difference in survival between conventionally and directionally cryopreserved samples at optimal interface velocities.

Conservation Biology and Reproduction in a Time of Developmental Plasticity

William Holt, Pierre Comizzoli

Summary: This review explores whether principles in conservation biology need to be revisited in light of the power of epigenetics. The effects of conservation breeding programs on the fitness of animals and the potential risks of advanced reproductive technologies are discussed. Ethical decisions about novel breeding methods continue to be controversial and difficult to resolve.

Live Microalgae-Based Diets as Enrichment to Improve the Nutritional Profile of the Calanoid Copepod Acartia tonsa (Dana, 1849) Nauplii

Andrea Martino, Daniel Montero, Javier Roo, William Vincent Holt, Silvia Lavorano, Riccardo Narizzano, Francisco Otero Ferrer

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of three microalgae-based diets on the biochemical composition and survival of calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa and rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. The results showed that using the binary diet I-R can increase protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids content in live feeds, with A. tonsa nauplii having higher nutritional value compared to B. plicatilis.

Extracellular vesicles in the male reproductive tract of the softshell turtle

Qiusheng Chen, William V. Holt

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been found in the male reproductive tract of the Chinese softshell turtle Pelodiscus sinensis, playing a role in cell communication, sperm maturation, transport, and storage, as well as exchanging information with telocytes. EVs are indispensable for normal reproductive function and can be used as a valuable biomarker for male fertility in P. sinensis.
