Summary: This study assessed the effects of vitamin D supplementation on arterial stiffness in obese adolescents. The researchers found that a high proportion of obese adolescents had vitamin D deficiency and supplementation improved carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and reduced the risk of arterial stiffness.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Results showed that serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly decreased in ED patients compared to the healthy control group, while CIMT values were significantly increased in the moderate and severe ED groups compared to the control group. IIEF-5 score was positively correlated with serum 25(OH)D level and negatively correlated with CIMT value. After adjusting for confounding factors, there were significant associations between CIMT values, 25(OH)D levels, and IIEF-5 scores.

Summary: In this work, we propose an end-to-end boundary-salience multi-branch network, BSMNet, to identify the carotid intima-media from ultrasound images. Our method exploits prior shape knowledge and anatomical dependence to improve the accuracy of boundary identification and incorporates a strip attention model for segmenting thin strip regions. Experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of our method, achieving about 0.02 improvement in Dice and HD95 compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Our method is expected to advance the analysis of systemic arterial disease with ultrasound imaging.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between carotid atherosclerotic parameters and renal function decline. The results showed that carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaques were associated with a decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there was no association between atherosclerotic parameters and the risk of developing albuminuria.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of carotid intima-media thickness and interadventitial diameter in midlife are associated with an increased risk of dementia, while the presence of carotid plaque did not show a significant association. Higher distensibility was associated with a lower risk of dementia.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the interrelations between serum urate (SU) levels and carotid atherosclerosis in subjects with different obesity phenotypes. The results showed that subjects with central obesity and mixed obesity had higher SU levels and markers of carotid atherosclerosis compared to subjects with general obesity and non-obese individuals.

Summary: Subclinical carotid atherosclerosis is an important factor in cardiovascular risk estimation by SCORE2. Carotid ultrasound improves the predictive performance of SCORE2 for cardiovascular risk assessment. SCORE2 may over-predict the risk in individuals without carotid plaque and under-predict the risk in those with carotid plaque.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the cardiac functions of female adolescents with vitamin D deficiency using echocardiography and investigate carotid intima-media thickness and asymmetric dimethylarginine levels. The results showed that vitamin D deficiency in female adolescence is associated with normal myocardial geometry and function, but higher carotid intima-media thickness.

Summary: Compared to the general population, people with adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) have a higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, impaired carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the association between non-functioning adrenal incidentalomas (NFAIs), metabolic profile, and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as a predictor of atherosclerosis. The results showed that patients with NFAIs had higher waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting insulin, glucose levels, and CIMT compared to the control group. These findings suggest that patients with NFAIs exhibit a range of metabolic abnormalities.

Summary: The study found a strong association between the maximum intima-media thickness of the carotid artery (Max IMT) and renal prognosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in those aged < 65 years. In patients under 65 years old, a 1-mm increase in Max IMT was significantly associated with disease progression.

Summary: Primary hyperparathyroidism is mainly caused by adenoma or single-gland disease, with a small percentage of cases being multiple gland disease or hyperplasia. Atypical parathyroid adenoma has characteristics of both typical adenoma and parathyroid carcinoma, showing significant differences in clinical, hematologic, histological, and immunohistochemical aspects. There were no disease relapses found in patients with atypical parathyroid adenoma during the 60-month follow-up period.

Summary: The study aimed to verify the presence of thyroid cancer in patients undergoing surgery for Graves' Disease, with or without thyroid nodules. Results showed a higher incidence of cancer in older patients with thyroid nodules, while younger patients were mostly nodule-free. Pre-operative ultrasound scans and molecular biomarkers analysis could help in evaluating nodules and understanding the pathogenic basis of Graves' neoplastic development.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential role of Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) in predicting treatment response and prognosis after RAIT. The findings suggest that in low to intermediate risk DTC patients, HT may affect the efficacy of RAIT, particularly reducing the successful rate of excellent response after RAIT. Additionally, HT did not have a prognostic impact such as stimulated thyroglobulin levels.

Summary: The study found that oxidative stress and inflammation increase in peritoneal dialysis patients, despite certain specific hemodialysis procedures may be beneficial. To improve the oxidative stress state in peritoneal dialysis patients, a multitarget approach is necessary, including adjustments in dialysis solution composition, strict glycemic control, optimal volume management, and the administration of antioxidants.

Summary: Excessive activation of the renin-angiotensin system in kidney disease leads to alteration of intracellular pathways, ultimately inducing cardiovascular and renal remodeling, exposing patients to chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease from the onset. Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology, with long-term consequences on disease progression and complications. Therapeutic targets based on experimental evidence may offer potential solutions.
