Objectives: Cardiovascular risk is increased in the early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is also found to be ongoing in renal transplant (Rtx) patients. As a sign of atherosclerosis, increased carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been widely accepted as a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), pentraxin-3 (PTX-3), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were introduced as oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers in ESRD. The role of Rtx in terms of atherogenesis, oxidative stress, and inflammation is still unclear. We aimed to investigate the relationship between IMA, PTX-3, NLR, and CIMT in Rtx patients without overt CVD and to compare these results with those obtained from healthy subjects and ESRD patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Design and methods: Cross-sectional analysis in which CIMT measurements, NLR, and serum PTX-3 and IMA levels were assessed in 18 Rtx patients (10 females; mean age: 40.0 +/- 13.3 years), 16 PD patients (7 females; 40.2 +/- 12.9 years), 14 HD patients (8 females; 46.6 +/- 10.7 years), and 19 healthy subjects (9 females; 36.9 +/- 8.9 years). Results: IMA, PTX-3, and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels, NLR, and CIMT of Rtx patients were found to be significantly higher compared with healthy subjects (p = 0.04, p < 0.0001, p < 0.005, p = 0.005, and p = 0.005, respectively). IMA level was positively correlated with hs-CRP and PTX-3 levels, NLR, and CIMT when all participants were included (r = 0.338, p = 0.005; r 0.485, p < 0.0001; r = 0.304, p = 0.013; and r = 0.499, p < 0.0001, respectively). Conclusion: There has been ongoing inflammation, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis in Rtx patients.

Summary: A 'learning healthcare system' based on electronic health records and other routinely collected healthcare data can provide continuous access to Real World Data (RWD), leading to a better understanding of medical practice. The use of RWD complements traditional evidence from clinical research and benefits all stakeholders. Lack of epidemiological data in Kazakhstan has led to lower life expectancy and poorer health indicators compared to countries with similar income levels. The Unified National Electronic Healthcare System (UNEHS) in Kazakhstan has created research databases that provide critical data on disease epidemiology and allow for extensive research activities.

Bayan Kurbanova, Zhannat Ashikbayeva, Aida Amantayeva, Akbota Sametova, Wilfried Blanc, Abduzhappar Gaipov, Daniele Tosi, Zhandos Utegulov

Summary: We utilized non-contact laser-based Brillouin light-scattering (BLS) spectroscopy to measure the viscoelastic properties of RF-heated and ablated bovine liver and chicken flesh tissues with embedded AuNPs. The local surface temperature of the flesh samples during hyperthermia was measured using optical backscattering reflectometry (OBR) and correlated with the viscoelastic variations in the heat-affected and ablated tissues. The observed changes in tissue stiffness were directly linked to heat-induced structural modifications and the denaturation of proteins.

Metabolically healthy obesity: Misleading phrase or healthy phenotype?

Cem Tanriover, Sidar Copur, Abduzhappar Gaipov, Batu Ozlusen, Rustu E. Akcan, Masanari Kuwabara, Mads Hornum, Daniel H. Van Raalte, Mehmet Kanbay

Summary: Obesity is a complex condition with different subtypes, one of which is metabolically healthy obesity (MHO). MHO has various definitions and its prevalence differs in different studies. Mechanisms underlying MHO include adipose tissue types and distribution, hormones, inflammation, diet, microbiota, and genetics. While MHO has relatively favorable metabolic characteristics compared to metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO), it is still associated with important chronic diseases and has the potential to progress into an unhealthy phenotype. The major treatment options for MHO include dietary modifications, exercise, bariatric surgery, and specific medications.

Aidar Alimbayev, Gulnur Zhakhina, Arnur Gusmanov, Yesbolat Sakko, Sauran Yerdessov, Iliyar Arupzhanov, Ardak Kashkynbayev, Amin Zollanvari, Abduzhappar Gaipov

Summary: Diabetes mellitus (DM) significantly impacts the quality of life, resulting in disability, high morbidity, and premature mortality. Predicting the one-year mortality of DM patients based on administrative health data is feasible and can help tailor treatments to high-risk patients. The study demonstrates that gradient-boosting ensemble learning methods outperform other algorithms in predicting one-year mortality, with an AUC between 0.78 and 0.80 on independent test sets. Age, duration of diabetes, hypertension, and sex are identified as the top four most important features for predicting one-year mortality.

Mechano-Chemistry across Phase Transitions in Heated Albumin Protein Solutions

Chingis Kharmyssov, Kairolla Sekerbayev, Zhangatay Nurekeyev, Abduzhappar Gaipov, Zhandos N. Utegulov

Summary: The presence of certain proteins in biofluids gives these fluids non-Newtonian viscoelastic properties, which can be used as biomarkers for diagnosing various health conditions. However, existing technologies for measuring these protein macromolecules have limitations. To address these issues, non-contact, optical Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy were proposed to assess the viscoelasticity and chemistry of non-Newtonian solutions at different temperatures. The monitoring of viscoelastic and chemical property evolution could provide novel potential mechano-chemical biomarkers for disease diagnosis and treatment.
