Summary: The study found a strong association between the maximum intima-media thickness of the carotid artery (Max IMT) and renal prognosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in those aged < 65 years. In patients under 65 years old, a 1-mm increase in Max IMT was significantly associated with disease progression.

Summary: In this work, we propose an end-to-end boundary-salience multi-branch network, BSMNet, to identify the carotid intima-media from ultrasound images. Our method exploits prior shape knowledge and anatomical dependence to improve the accuracy of boundary identification and incorporates a strip attention model for segmenting thin strip regions. Experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of our method, achieving about 0.02 improvement in Dice and HD95 compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Our method is expected to advance the analysis of systemic arterial disease with ultrasound imaging.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of carotid intima-media thickness and interadventitial diameter in midlife are associated with an increased risk of dementia, while the presence of carotid plaque did not show a significant association. Higher distensibility was associated with a lower risk of dementia.

Summary: The association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and common carotid artery (CCA)-intima media thickness (IMT) is still debated. This study found that CCA-IMT was significantly increased in GDM women during the third trimester of pregnancy. In the postpartum period, factors such as obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, and increased inflammatory markers may contribute to persistent CCA-IMT increase.

Summary: This study evaluated the association of carotid atherosclerosis and microalbuminuria with 10-year ASCVD risk in middle-aged individuals in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that microalbuminuria measured by SUA may indicate risk of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis and high 10-year ASCVD risk.

Summary: Subclinical carotid atherosclerosis is an important factor in cardiovascular risk estimation by SCORE2. Carotid ultrasound improves the predictive performance of SCORE2 for cardiovascular risk assessment. Summary: Asthma is associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers and endothelial dysfunction, as evidenced by decreased flow-mediated dilatation and increased intima-media thickness. Von Willebrand factor (vWF) is related to age and inversely associated with FEV1 in asthma, while surprisingly negatively correlated with pentraxin-3, which is positively associated with airway remodeling indices. The biological role of pentraxin-3 in asthma and endothelial damage remains unknown.

Summary: Compared to the general population, people with adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) have a higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, impaired carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the association between non-functioning adrenal incidentalomas (NFAIs), metabolic profile, and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as a predictor of atherosclerosis. The results showed that patients with NFAIs had higher waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting insulin, glucose levels, and CIMT compared to the control group. These findings suggest that patients with NFAIs exhibit a range of metabolic abnormalities.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between carotid atherosclerotic parameters and renal function decline. The results showed that carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaques were associated with a decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there was no association between atherosclerotic parameters and the risk of developing albuminuria.

Summary: A 'learning healthcare system' based on electronic health records and other routinely collected healthcare data can provide continuous access to Real World Data (RWD), leading to a better understanding of medical practice. The use of RWD complements traditional evidence from clinical research and benefits all stakeholders. Lack of epidemiological data in Kazakhstan has led to lower life expectancy and poorer health indicators compared to countries with similar income levels. The Unified National Electronic Healthcare System (UNEHS) in Kazakhstan has created research databases that provide critical data on disease epidemiology and allow for extensive research activities.

Summary: A total of 10,251 patients with viral meningitis were admitted to hospitals in Kazakhstan from 2014 to 2019. Enteroviral meningitis was the main cause of VM in children. The incidence rate of VM increased from 13 to 18 cases per 100,000 population. The climatic indicators, such as temperature and humidity, influenced the incidence rate of VM.

Summary: A Global Burden of Disease study revealed that 9.6 million years lived with disability were lost due to hip and knee osteoarthritis in 2017. This study aims to investigate the epidemiology of knee osteoarthritis in Kazakhstan, utilizing data from 56,895 patients between 2014-2020. The findings highlight age and sex-based differences, as well as regional disparities in the incidence of knee osteoarthritis, providing valuable insights for the development of specific diagnostic approaches and personalized therapy protocols.

Summary: We utilized non-contact laser-based Brillouin light-scattering (BLS) spectroscopy to measure the viscoelastic properties of RF-heated and ablated bovine liver and chicken flesh tissues with embedded AuNPs. The local surface temperature of the flesh samples during hyperthermia was measured using optical backscattering reflectometry (OBR) and correlated with the viscoelastic variations in the heat-affected and ablated tissues. The observed changes in tissue stiffness were directly linked to heat-induced structural modifications and the denaturation of proteins.

Summary: Obesity is a complex condition with different subtypes, one of which is metabolically healthy obesity (MHO). MHO has various definitions and its prevalence differs in different studies. Mechanisms underlying MHO include adipose tissue types and distribution, hormones, inflammation, diet, microbiota, and genetics. While MHO has relatively favorable metabolic characteristics compared to metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO), it is still associated with important chronic diseases and has the potential to progress into an unhealthy phenotype. The major treatment options for MHO include dietary modifications, exercise, bariatric surgery, and specific medications.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus (DM) significantly impacts the quality of life, resulting in disability, high morbidity, and premature mortality. Predicting the one-year mortality of DM patients based on administrative health data is feasible and can help tailor treatments to high-risk patients. The study demonstrates that gradient-boosting ensemble learning methods outperform other algorithms in predicting one-year mortality, with an AUC between 0.78 and 0.80 on independent test sets. Age, duration of diabetes, hypertension, and sex are identified as the top four most important features for predicting one-year mortality.

Summary: The presence of certain proteins in biofluids gives these fluids non-Newtonian viscoelastic properties, which can be used as biomarkers for diagnosing various health conditions. However, existing technologies for measuring these protein macromolecules have limitations. To address these issues, non-contact, optical Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy were proposed to assess the viscoelasticity and chemistry of non-Newtonian solutions at different temperatures. The monitoring of viscoelastic and chemical property evolution could provide novel potential mechano-chemical biomarkers for disease diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: This study found that CTHRC1 protein is associated with indicators of chronic kidney disease and shows a significant difference between CKD patients and healthy individuals. Given the limited understanding of CKD, plasma levels of CTHRC1 may aid in the diagnosis of CKD and further research in a wider and more diverse patient population is needed.
