Summary: The in vivo fate of hyaluronan is influenced by its molecular weight, with low Mw hyaluronan being more efficiently eliminated while high Mw hyaluronan exhibits saturable kinetics. Hyaluronan is taken up by liver cells and metabolized into activated sugars in a similar manner regardless of its molecular weight. The use of 13C-labeling combined with LC-MS is an effective approach to studying the biological activities of hyaluronan.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a major reservoir of organic matter on Earth, and its molecular composition was characterized using FT-ICR MS in 510 samples from the China Coastal Environments. A machine learning model based on 5199 molecular formulas accurately predicted delta 13C values and revealed the role of degradation processes, microbial activities, and primary production in regulating DOM from rivers to the ocean continuum. The findings demonstrate the potential of machine learning to capture the complex relationships between DOM composition and bulk parameters.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial and seasonal distributions of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in dominant zooplankton groups in Jiaozhou Bay. The results showed that the distributions of these isotopes were influenced by terrigenous organic matter input and phytoplankton biomass, with variations observed in different seasons. The study also found a correlation between small zooplankton stable isotope values and particulate organic matter. The influence of anthropogenic nutrient input on isotopic baseline and trophic levels of zooplankton groups was discussed.

Summary: This study investigated the root endophytic fungal diversity and trophic relationships with orchids at different phenological stages in Bletilla striata and B. ochracea. Significant temporal variation in the diversity of root endophytic fungi was observed throughout the whole growth periods of the orchids, with higher fungal community richness during the florescence and emergence periods. The two Bletilla species were dominated by Agaricomycetes and Basidiomycota fungi, with dynamic C-13 and N-15 natural abundance variations across all growth stages, indicating carbon acquisition from root endophytic fungi and nutritional requirements of the plants.

Previous research has focused mainly on C3 plants, and the effect of charring on C4 plants is less understood. This study examines the effects of charring on the isotopic values of two C4 species and finds that temperature has a greater influence than time.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between leaves, leaf litter, soil carbon, soil nitrogen and their isotopes in four different-aged Zanthoxylum planispinum var. dintanensis plantations in the karst plateau gorge area of Guizhou Province, China. The results showed that the delta C-13 and delta N-15 contents were highest in the soil, followed by litter and leaves. With increasing plantation age, soil C-13 decreased, while leaf and litter delta N-15 increased and then decreased. The litter layer was positively correlated with soil delta C-13 and negatively correlated with delta N-15.

By using C-13-DNA stable-isotope probe and Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing, the researchers found differences in the abundance and diversity of anammox bacteria in purple paddy soils at different temperatures. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the regulation of soil nitrogen cycling.
