A measurement procedure based on alanine/electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry was implemented successfully providing simple, stable, and accurate dose-to-water (D-w) measurements. The correspondence between alanine and ionization chamber measurements in reference conditions was excellent. Alanine/EMR dosimetry might be a valuable alternative to thermoluminescent (TLD) and ionization chamber based measuring procedures in radiotherapy audits. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Bio-Based Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)/Thermoplastic Starch Composites as a Host Matrix for Biochar Fillers

Tom Haeldermans, P. Samyn, R. Cardinaels, D. Vandamme, K. Vanreppelen, A. Cuypers, S. Schreurs

Summary: Biochar is a less-utilized candidate for serving as an alternative filler in PHB-based composites. Adding biochar to the composites can enhance morphology and crystallization kinetics up to a certain percentage, but higher percentages of filler may have an opposite effect. Additionally, the study reveals that TPS can work as an excellent intermediary between biochar and PHB, maintaining limited degradation and reduction in molecular weight compared to the PHB/char samples. Like biochar, TPS also acts as a nucleation agent and removes the influence of biochar on the thermal stability of the composites.

Summary: The article investigates the response of Al2O3:C and Al2O3:C,Mg radioluminescence films for medical dosimetry, finding that Al2O3:C,Mg films have advantages over Al2O3:C films, with better performance, suitable for small field beam dosimetry, and capable of real-time measurement of two-dimensional dose-rate distributions, making it an effective dosimetry system.

Micromechanical and microstructural analysis of Fe-rich plasma slag-based inorganic polymers

Bram Mast, Sylke Fransis, Bram Vandoren, Andrea Cambriani, Wouter Schroeyers, Yiannis Pontikes, Pieter Samyn, Sonja Schreurs

Summary: The properties of plasma slag based IPs can be affected by changing the precursor fineness and molar ratios of SiO2/Na2O and H2O/Na2O in the activating solution. Decreasing SiO2/Na2O ratio increases strength while decreasing H2O/Na2O ratio increases elastic modulus. The effect of elastic modulus of the binder phase on strain softening was found to be negligible.

Validation of TOPAS MC for modelling the efficiency of an extended-range coaxial p-type HPGe detector

Lowie Brabants, Guilaume Lutter, Jan Paepen, Bram Vandoren, Brigitte Reniers, Wouter Schroeyers

Summary: The efficiency of a coaxial p-type HPGe detector from Canberra was modeled using TOPAS MC software and validated by comparing experimental efficiencies with those calculated by simulations. Three different radionuclide source geometries were used to validate the model, meeting a 5% relative difference criteria for various radionuclides and gamma-ray energies. Consequently, the detector model created with TOPAS MC was considered validated.

Silver-exchanged zeolites for collecting and separating xenon directly from atmospheric air

Christophe Gueibe, Jos Rutten, Johan Camps, Dominique Moyaux, Wouter Schroeyers, Romano Plenteda, Nikolaus Hermanspahn, Daria Minta, Sonja Schreurs

Summary: This study compared the potential of two AgZs, two MOFs and one AC in collecting and separating Xe from air. It was found that both AgZs exhibited high selectivity and adsorption capacity for Xe at room temperature, and were able to efficiently separate Xe from other gases. However, a limitation of these AgZs was the strong co-adsorption of moisture, which significantly reduced Xe collection.

Poly(lactic acid) bio-composites containing biochar particles: Effects of fillers and plasticizer on crystallization and thermal properties

T. Haeldermans, P. Samyn, R. Cardinaels, D. Vandamme, K. Vanreppelen, A. Cuypers, S. Schreurs

Summary: Biochar is commonly used as a filler material in biodegradable composites for its favorable thermal and mechanical properties. The study shows that as the biochar content increases in PLA/biochar composites, the thermal degradation temperature decreases, while in PLA/TPS/biochar composites, the impact of biochar is shielded by TPS. This work highlights the shielding effect TPS has on biochar and its potential for optimizing the production and biodegradability of these composites.
