The standard treatment choice for cancer metastasis has been systemic management, including cytotoxic chemotherapy, hormonal manipulation, and targeted therapy. Emerging evidence has shown an oligometastatic state, an intermediate state between limited primary cancer and polymetastatic cancer, in which local therapy for metastatic lesions results in satisfactory survival comparable to non-metastatic disease. We provide a comprehensive introduction of evidence from experimental and clinical studies in favor of the oligometastatic phenotype, we review the efficacy and safety of surgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy in the treatment of oligometastases, and finally, we discuss the way to differentiate the oligometastatic state from polymetastasis.

Land-Atmosphere Feedbacks Weaken the Cooling Effect of Soil Organic Matter Property toward Deep Soil on the Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Jing Sun, Kun Yang, Hui Lu, Xu Zhou, Xin Li, Yingying Chen, Weidong Guo, Jonathon S. Wright

Summary: This study comprehensively explores the effects of soil organic matter (SOM) on the hydrothermal state of the land-atmosphere system on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The results show that SOM can improve the simulations by reducing cold and wet biases, increasing air temperature, decreasing humidity, and reducing precipitation. Including SOM in climate models not only improves the representation of atmospheric energy and water cycles, but also enhances the simulation of frozen soil evolution with increased confidence and reliability.

Temporally extended satellite-derived surface air temperatures reveal a complete warming picture on the Tibetan Plateau

Jun Qin, Min He, Wei Yang, Ning Lu, Ling Yao, Hou Jiang, Jin Wu, Kun Yang, Chenghu Zhou

Summary: The Tibetan Plateau is experiencing rapid warming, leading to increased glacial melting and natural hazards. However, due to a lack of high-quality, long-term observations, there is no complete understanding of its temperature status in the past few decades. This study uses satellite and weather station data to derive long-term surface air temperatures, revealing widespread warming across the plateau, particularly in the western region. The derived warming rate is higher than other datasets, implying a severe threat to the cryosphere.

Tropical Cyclone Intensity Probabilistic Forecasting System Based on Deep Learning

Fan Meng, Kunlin Yang, Yichen Yao, Zhibin Wang, Tao Song

Summary: Tropical cyclones are extreme disasters with significant impact on human beings, and forecasting their intensity has been a challenging task. Deep learning-based intensity forecasting has shown potential to outperform traditional methods, but inherent uncertainty in weather forecasting needs to be quantified for decision-making and risk assessment. This study proposes an intelligent system, PTCIF, based on deep learning to quantify uncertainty using multimodal meteorological data, the first study to assess uncertainty of tropical cyclones using a deep learning approach. Probabilistic forecasts are made for the intensity of 6-24 hours, showing comparable performance to weather forecast centers in terms of deterministic forecasts. Reliable prediction intervals and probabilistic forecasts are obtained, which are crucial for disaster warning and expected to complement operational models.

Spatiotemporal variations, surface inventory, and cross regional impact of current-use organoamine pesticides in Chinese Marginal Seas

Hongyuan Zheng, Zhiyi Chen, Kunde Yang, Kaiyan Xiao, Jincai Zhu, Zhiwei Gao, Zheyi Han, Yanguang Liu, Minghong Cai

Summary: Current-use Organoamine Pesticides (CUOAPs) are emerging pesticide pollutants found in Chinese Marginal Seas (CMSs), with the highest levels detected in the East China Sea. The Yangtze and Yellow rivers play a crucial role as significant terrestrial sources, leading to variations in the source, distribution, and seasonal patterns of CUOAPs. Spatial redistribution occurs through ocean current transport, resulting in significant regional disparities. CMSs may become a secondary source region for the surrounding seas.

Defective iron based metal-organic frameworks derived from zero-valent iron for highly efficient fenton-like catalysis

Limin Duan, Huihao Jiang, Wenhao Wu, Daohui Lin, Kun Yang

Summary: Introducing crystal defects into iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) is a promising strategy to enhance Fenton-like performance. However, developing a facile and effective strategy to construct defective Fe-MOFs as highly efficient Fenton-like catalysts is still challenging. In this study, MIL-100(Fe) (Def-MIL-100 (Fe)) with missing ligand defects was synthesized by a simple heterogeneous reaction, and it exhibited significantly higher Fenton-like activity compared to the perfect MIL-100(Fe). The missing ligand defects played a key role in promoting fast H2O2 adsorption, accelerating electron transfer, and improving OH generation and utilization efficiency.

Estimating GRACE terrestrial water storage anomaly using an improved point mass solution

Vagner Ferreira, Bin Yong, Henry Montecino, Christopher E. E. Ndehedehe, Kurt Seitz, Hansjoerg Kutterer, Kun Yang

Summary: The availability and use of terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) supports various hydrological applications. There are currently five operational TWSA products, three based on mass concentration (mascon) solutions and two based on spherical harmonic coefficients (SHCs) synthesis. This study presents a new TWSA data set based on novel processing protocols, with a spatial re-sampling of 0.25 arc-degrees from 2002 to 2022, which reliably agrees with mascon solutions. The proposed data set would be valuable for regional hydrological applications, particularly for improved assessment of regional water budgets.

Ship-to-ship maritime wireless channel modeling under various sea state conditions based on REL model

Fang Li, Yishui Shui, Jiayao Liang, Kun Yang, Junyi Yu

Summary: By modeling the measured data of marine wireless channels and creating sea surface morphology models under multiple wind speeds, this paper calculates the radio propagation characteristics of the Pearl River estuary and estimates the path loss in the same area under different conditions using the Monte Carlo method. The simulation results show that the electric wave propagation gradually changes from the round earth loss (REL) model to the free space model with increasing wind speed. The distribution of the shadow fading varies with distance. The findings provide references for the network planning of marine communication.

Survival benefit of thoracic radiotherapy plus EGFR-TKIs in patients with non-oligometastatic advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: a single-center retrospective study

Fangyuan Zhou, You Qin, Xixi Liu, Jing Huang, Bian Wu, Zhanjie Zhang, Zhongyuan Yin, Jinsong Yang, Sheng Zhang, Ke Jiang, Kunyu Yang

Summary: This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of thoracic radiotherapy in patients with stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The findings show that the combination of EGFR inhibitors and thoracic radiotherapy significantly improves overall survival but not progression-free survival. Therefore, preemptive thoracic radiotherapy during EGFR-TKI treatment could be considered as a competitive first-line therapeutic option with superior progression-free survival and a lower incidence of side effects.
