Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of biomarkers used for predicting bacterial, viral, and fungal infections in immunocompromised children presenting with fever. The results showed that some biomarkers were significantly associated with bacterial infection and provided predictive data, but there was limited research on viral and fungal infections. This study highlighted the challenges in diagnosing fever in this population and emphasized the need for improved biomarkers and clinical decision-making tools.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors predicting mortality in febrile neutropenic patients with bacteremia. The results showed that pulse rate, quick SOFA score, inappropriate antimicrobial treatment, Gram-negative bacteremia, bacteremia of non-urinary origin, and advancing age were independent predictors of mortality. Local antibiotic susceptibility profiles should be integrated into therapeutic recommendations, and infection control and prevention measures should be prioritized.

Summary: The use of antibiotics in children under five with febrile illness in Bangladesh is common, with unqualified sources contributing to the majority of antibiotic prescriptions. Infants under six months of age have the highest antibiotic usage rate. Parents with higher education levels are more likely to seek antibiotics for their children. Educational interventions and improved regulations on antibiotic purchase may help improve antibiotic dispensing practices.

Summary: Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis may lead to increased childhood body mass index, especially in the prevention of group B streptococcal infection. This study found that breastfeeding does not modify this association.

Summary: This paper reports the primary findings of a randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of point-of-care tests combined with a training-and-communication package on reducing antibiotic prescriptions for fever management in Burkina Faso. The results show that the implementation of this package can effectively reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions without compromising clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study externally validated and updated the Feverkids clinical prediction model for differentiating bacterial pneumonia and other SBIs from non-SBI causes of fever in immunocompromised children. The model showed good discrimination for bacterial pneumonia but poorer performance for other SBIs. The rule-out thresholds have the potential to reduce unnecessary investigations and antibiotics in this high-risk group.

Summary: The BC/PVA wound dressings loaded with antibiotics prepared via freeze-thawing exhibited high swelling ratio, low water loss percentage, and slow antibiotic release properties. They showed great antibacterial activity against E.coli and S. aureus, indicating their potential as wound dressings.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of a revised febrile neutropenia management algorithm on the use of broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics in adults with hematologic malignancies. The results showed a decrease in the use of vancomycin and meropenem following the implementation of the stricter algorithm, with no adverse outcomes observed.

Summary: This study aims to overcome the limitations of curcumin and zein in clinical therapy. By modifying zein to improve its hydrophilicity and stability, a curcumin-ZSP DDS with good dispersibility and drug loading was successfully prepared. The DDS exhibited sustained release in simulated in vitro conditions and showed higher cytotoxicity compared to raw curcumin.

Summary: Through a multi-center study, we have identified protein biomarkers that may be developed into a blood-based point-of-care diagnostic test for rapidly distinguishing bacterial and viral infections in febrile children. This study provides a potential useful tool for improving the treatment of febrile children.
