Objective: To identify the optimal waist:height ratio (WHtR) cut-off point that discriminates cardiometabolic risk factors in Turkish adults. Design: Cross-sectional study. Hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome score >= 2 (presence of two or more metabolic syndrome components except for waist circumference) and at least one risk factor (diabetes, hypertension or dyslipidaemia) were categorical outcome variables. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were prepared by plotting 1 - specificity on the x-axis and sensitivity on the y-axis. The WHtR value that had the highest Youden index was selected as the optimal cut-off point for each cardiometabolic risk factor (Youden index = sensitivity + specificity 1). Setting: Turkey, 2003. Subjects: Adults (1121 women and 571 men) aged 18 years and over were examined. Results: Analysis of ROC coordinate tables showed that the optimal cut-off value ranged between 0.55 and 0.60 and was almost equal between men and women. The sensitivities of the identified cut-offs were between 0.63 and 0.81, the specificities were between 0.42 and 0.71 and the accuracies were between 0.65 and 0.73, for men and women. The cut-off point of 0.59 was the most frequently identified value for discrimination of the studied cardiometabolic risk factors. Subjects classified as having WHtR 0.59 had significantly higher age and sociodemographic multivariable-adjusted odds ratios for cardiometabolic risk factors than subjects with WHtR <05.9, except for diabetes in men. Conclusions: We show that the optimal WHtR cut-off point to discriminate cardiometabolic risk factors is 0.59 in Turkish adults.

Do Rotating Night Shifts Change Nurses' Nutritional Status? A Cross-Sectional Study

Hande Gul Ulusoy, Nevin Sanlier, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: The study found that most nurses working in rotating night shifts were evening chronotype and had poor sleep quality. During night shifts, nurses consumed higher levels of carbohydrates, fats, and cholesterol in their diet, with increased intake of saturated fat and calcium. Additionally, water intake decreased while tea intake increased.

Dietary Antioxidant Capacity and Serum Inflammatory Biomarkers Levels in Cancer Survivors

Senay Burcin Alkan, Mehmet Artac, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: This study found no significant difference in the dietary intake of carotenoids, tocopherols, and flavonoids between patients with gastrointestinal system and non-gastrointestinal system cancers. However, patients with gastrointestinal system cancer had a significantly higher total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP) compared to patients with non-gastrointestinal system cancer. Serum inflammatory markers (CRP and NLR) were inversely associated with dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC).

Validation of MEDFICTS Dietary Assessment Questionnaire in Turkish Population

Zeynep Goktas, Derya Dikmen, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: The objective of the study was to assess the validity of the MEDFICTS questionnaire in the Turkish population. Results showed that the total fat intake ratio exceeded the recommended level and the mean MEDCISTS score was 66.3, indicating moderate accuracy of the questionnaire. However, sensitivity analysis did not demonstrate the recommended cut-off point of 40 for the Turkish population.

Anthropometric measurements and serum TNF-α, IL-6 and adiponectin in type 2 diabetes

Summary: Obesity and central adiposity play a significant role in elevating inflammatory cytokine levels in diabetic patients, as evidenced by correlations between serum concentrations of CRP and TNF-alpha with anthropometric measurements such as waist circumference. Serum adiponectin levels were lower in diabetic patients compared to healthy subjects, indicating a potential link between adiposity and inflammation in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Summary: This review evaluates existing models to estimate the health and/or economic impact of nutrition interventions. The study finds that the complexity of these models and the challenges of data availability require more guidance and standardization to compare results across studies.

Dietary total antioxidant capacity and serum 8-ohdg in patients with schizophrenia

Gulbin Karagol, Emrah Songur, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: This study aimed to determine the oxidative stress status of patients with schizophrenia and examine the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). The results showed that patients with schizophrenia had lower values of dietary ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP-1, FRAP-2), Trolox equivalence antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (H-ORAC) compared to the healthy controls. However, serum 8-OHdG levels were similar in both groups. Therefore, nutritional interventions, especially sufficient intake of dietary antioxidants, should be encouraged in patients with schizophrenia.

Are dietary and serum advanced glycation end-products related to inflammation and oxidation biomarkers in breast cancer patients: a follow-up study

Summary: This study evaluates the relationship between dietary and serum advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) with serum inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in breast cancer (BC) patients. The study suggests a limited correlation between dietary and serum AGEs with inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers in BC patients. Treatment appears to decrease the levels of inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers, but dietary and serum AGE levels do not correspondingly decline. HER2- subtype is associated with higher dietary and serum AGEs as well as higher inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers.

Greenhouse Gas Emission and Water Footprint of the National Diet in Turkey: Results from Turkey Nutrition and Health Survey 2017

Azad Ilhan, Rumeysa Yenicag, Ece Yalcin Pehlivan, Ebru Ozturk, Sevilay Karahan, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: This study aimed to assess the sustainability of the national diet in Turkey and its association with diet quality, dietary requirements, and sociodemographic factors. The results showed that the dietary greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) and water footprint (WF) in Turkey were lower than the world average. Higher GHGEs and WF were associated with higher nutrient intake, but lower diet quality and dietary diversity scores. These findings could contribute to the development of dietary guidelines promoting sustainable choices.

Effect of body composition on the athletic performance of soccer referees

Azad Ilhan, Surhat Muniroglu, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: This study aimed to assess the nutrition and examine the relationship between athletic performance and body composition in soccer referees. The participants were 120 male soccer referees, and sprint tests and physical fitness tests were conducted. It was found that body composition differed between city and class referees, and there were correlations between fat mass and test scores. Waist circumference also showed correlations with test scores. Nutritional recommendations for soccer referees should consider individual body composition, training intensity, and match frequency.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) and serum antioxidant and oxidant parameters in hemodialysis patients. The results showed that dTAC values were lower in hemodialysis patients and correlated with serum PON1 and CRP levels. Nutritional status in dysphagic and nondysphagic elderly persons in turkey: a comparison study

Hatice Merve Bayram, Fatma Ilgaz, Selen Serel-Arslan, Numan Demir, Neslisah Rakicioglu

Summary: The study revealed that dysphagia has a significant impact on the nutritional status of elderly individuals, often resulting in weight loss, malnutrition, and nutritional deficiencies. Regular nutritional monitoring should be emphasized as part of geriatric care plans, given that nutritional deficiencies are common comorbidities of dysphagia in this age group.
