Summary: The study investigates the dietary aflatoxin exposure of lactating mothers in the southeastern region of Kenya. It examines the socioeconomic characteristics, food consumption patterns, and postharvest handling of maize among 170 lactating mothers. The results show a high prevalence of aflatoxin in food samples and highlight the need for household food safety measures in the study area.

Summary: The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of studies that identified the dietary patterns in schoolchildren (7-10 years old) and their associated factors. Unhealthy dietary patterns were found in 93.75% of the studies, with factors such as higher screen time, low bone mass, weight and fat gain in children, and meal skipping being associated with their consumption. Children's dietary patterns were related to their behavior, nutritional status, and family environment habits.

Summary: This study compared the dietary intake of 242 mothers in Western Kenya with the recommended range of 11 EAT-Lancet food groups. The findings showed that the mothers' diets differed from the EAT-Lancet reference diet, especially in terms of the minimum intake requirement for certain food groups.

Summary: The study conducted among lactating women in the Debub Bench district found a high magnitude of unacceptable dietary diversity, with factors such as lack of nutrition information, absence of garden, absence of latrine, and household food insecurity significantly associated with this outcome. Recommendations include promoting dietary diversity and health programs for lactating women, providing adequate nutritional information, and empowering mothers to address household food insecurity through gardening.

Summary: The current study examines food consumption and dietary diversity among internal migrant households in Kenya. The findings suggest that migrant households are not necessarily more likely to have inferior diets or low dietary diversity compared to their local counterparts. Factors such as length of stay in the city, rural-urban links, and food transfers do not significantly impact dietary diversity. Education, employment, household income, and food price increases are better predictors of whether a household experiences dietary deprivation. Furthermore, the analysis highlights the strong relationship between food security and dietary diversity.

Summary: This study explores whether flavor compounds from a traditional curry dish consumed by breastfeeding mothers can be detected in their milk and perceived by the infant. The research found that pungency was the dominant taste impression in the milk after consumption of the curry dish, with piperine being the only intervention-derived compound identified in human milk at concentrations below the human taste threshold.

Summary: Ingestion of a standard curry dish can alter the aroma of breast milk, potentially affecting infants during breastfeeding. The study also shows that the extent of aroma transfer varies between compounds and individuals.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of a checklist as a tool for assessing chest compression quality in schoolchildren. The results showed moderate to high agreement between the checklist and real-time software in evaluating CPR performance. Older schoolchildren performed CPR better regardless of sex and BMI.

Summary: This study found associations between genetic polymorphisms (SNPs) and eating behavior and obesity phenotype in schoolchildren. Different SNPs were associated with various eating behaviors, primarily those related to pro-eating behaviors or increased risk of developing obesity. Feeding behavior appears to mediate between genotype and obesity phenotype.

Summary: The conversion of natural ecosystems by human activities has led to the destruction and deterioration of natural habitats. This study examines the diet preference of cheetahs in the rangelands of south-eastern Kenya and finds that their preference for prey is not influenced by the abundance of specific prey species.
