We conducted this study to determine the relationships between the use of self-regulated learning strategies (SRL) and depression scores among medical students. An accelerated prospective cohort study among 623 students at a public medical university in Vietnam was carried out during the academic year 2012-2013. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (21 items) was used to measure depression scores as the primary research outcome, and to measure anxiety and stress scores as the confounding variables. Fourteen SRL subscales including intrinsic/extrinsic goal orientation, task value, self-efficacy for learning, control of learning beliefs, rehearsal, elaboration, organization, critical thinking, meta-cognitive strategies, time and study environment, effort regulation, peer learning, and help seeking were measured using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Data were collected at two points in time (once each semester). There were 744 responses at the first time (95.88%) and 623 at time two (drop-out rate of 16.26%). The generalized estimating equation was applied to identify any relationships between the use of each SRL subscale and depression scores at time 2, adjusting for the effects of depression at time 1, anxiety, stress, within cluster correlation, and potential demographic covariates. Separate multivariate GEE analysis indicated that all SRL subscales were significantly negatively associated with depression scores, except for extrinsic goal orientation and peer learning. Whereas full multivariate GEE analysis revealed that self-efficacyT1, help-seekingT1, time and study environmentT2 were found to be significantly negatively associated with depressionT2, adjusting for the effects of depressionT1, anxiety, stress, and demographic covariates. The results should be used to provide appropriate support for medical students to reduce depression.

Restoration impacts on rates of denitrification and greenhouse gas fluxes from tropical coastal wetlands

Sophie A. Comer-Warner, Anh T. Q. Nguyen, Minh N. Nguyen, Manlin Wang, Antony Turner, Hue Le, Fotis Sgouridis, Stefan Krause, Nicholas Kettridge, Nghia Nguyen, R. Liz Hamilton, Sami Ullah

Summary: This study investigated denitrification and greenhouse gas fluxes in mangrove and Melaleuca forest soils of Vietnam, showing significant differences in N2O and CO2 emissions between the two forest types. Restoration efforts had significant impacts on CO2 and CH4 fluxes in mangrove soils, indicating the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving water quality through ecosystem restoration in coastal wetlands.

Molecularly imprinted polymer-coated gold nanorods decorated on spherical polystyrene periodic array for surface-enhanced Raman detection of bisphenol A

Mai T. T. Nguyen, Hung V. Giap, Sang N. Nguyen, Huy L. Nguyen, An H. T. Vu, Hung N. Nguyen, Dzung T. Nguyen

Summary: In this study, a multifunctional structure consisting of molecularly imprinted polymer-coated gold nanorods on a polystyrene close-packed monolayer microarray (AuNR@MIP/PS) was designed to improve the selectivity and reproducibility of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensor devices. The combination of three components in the structure contributed to the high performance and sensitivity of the substrate in detecting molecules of interest by SERS. The substrate showed good specificity and sensitivity for bisphenol A (BPA) detection and accurately detected BPA in real orange juice.

Symptom Burden among Hospitalised Older Patients with Heart Failure in Hanoi, Vietnam

Thanh Thi Nguyen, Thanh Xuan Nguyen, Thu Thi Hoai Nguyen, Tam Ngoc Nguyen, Huong Thi Thu Nguyen, Huong Thi Thanh Nguyen, Anh Trung Nguyen, Thang Pham, Huyen Thi Thanh Vu

Summary: This study examined the symptom burden among older patients hospitalized for heart failure. The results showed that patients commonly experienced symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and anxiety. Depression was significantly associated with heart failure class, total symptom burden score, and left ventricular ejection fraction. Further research on adverse outcomes and the implementation of palliative care approaches targeting symptom reduction are recommended for heart failure patients.

Truong X. Ngo, Ha Pham, Hieu D. T. Phan, Anh T. N. Nguyen, Hien T. To, Thanh T. N. Nguyen

Summary: This article introduces an approach to estimate daily PM2.5 concentration in Vietnam from 2012 to 2020. The approach utilizes ground PM2.5 measurements, satellite aerosol optical depth, meteorological and land use maps, and applies a mixed effect model (MEM) to account for cloudy conditions. The resulting dataset provides the first long-term, comprehensive, and high-quality PM2.5 dataset for Vietnam, and has been used in various studies and applications in the environment and public health.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the levels of arsenic in the soil-rice system in the Mekong River delta, focusing on the geographical distribution and the relation to soil physio-chemical properties. The study found that soil arsenic contents varied greatly, while straw arsenic content was about one-tenth of the soil content. The accumulation of arsenic in rice was likely affected by various factors, with the mutual effects of soil arsenic pool and soil properties being the most obvious.

An investigation of consumers' preference and willingness to pay for fish welfare in Denmark: A discrete choice modeling approach

Hans Stubbe Solgaard, Yingkui Yang, Thong Tien Nguyen

Summary: The welfare of farmed fish has become an important consideration for consumers when making purchasing decisions. This study aims to investigate consumers' preferences and willingness to pay for farmed fish welfare and also examines the influence of social desirability on their responses. An online survey was conducted among Danish consumers, using a discrete choice experiment to elicit their preferences and willingness to pay for fish welfare. The findings reveal that attributes such as fish form, labeling, price, and premium have an impact on consumers' choice of fish. The study also highlights the presence of consumer heterogeneity in preferences and willingness to pay, and the influence of social desirability bias on the valuation of fish welfare.
