Abstract

Stigma is one of the greatest challenges facing people with a psychiatric diagnosis. They are widely stigmatised by the general public in the western world. The aim of this study was to examine public stigma attitudes towards schizophrenia, depression and anxiety. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) 2008 opinions survey (n=1070) was utilised. Percentage of endorsements for stigma items were initially compared to the previous 1998 and 2003 databases. Overall stigma attitudes had decreased (from 1998 to 2008) but increased since 2003. A principal components factor analysis identified that stigma attitudes have the same three factors structure across all diagnoses; negative stereotypes, patient blame and inability to recover. Schizophrenia was significantly associated with the most negative stereotypes, least blamed and viewed as least likely to recover compared to anxiety and depression. Public and individualised interventions that target diagnostic variability in stigma attitudes need to be developed and examined in future research. (c) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

Stigmatizing attitudes toward mental illness among caregivers of patients with mental disorders in China

Summary: This study explored the stigmatizing attitudes towards depression, schizophrenia, and general anxiety disorder (GAD) among caregivers in China. Data on caregivers’ attitudes and willingness to interact with individuals with mental disorders were collected using vignettes. The results showed that despite the stigma and desire for social distance, caregivers often expected positive outcomes and more positive attitudes towards mental disorders. It is important to improve caregivers’ knowledge about mental health and reduce stigma.

Measuring the effectiveness of psychoeducation on adherence, depression, anxiety and stress among patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia. a control trial

Summary: This study investigates the effects of depression and stress on attitudes towards medication in schizophrenia, and explores the impact of hope-based psychoeducation intervention. Results indicate that psychoeducation significantly improved medication attitudes and reduced anxiety, with longer pharmacotherapy duration, fewer hospitalizations, and lower depression levels predicting positive attitudes towards medication. Control group did not show significant changes. The study contributes to literature emphasizing the importance of patients' hope, empowerment, and control over illness in medication adherence.

Attitudes of the police towards individuals with a known psychiatric diagnosis

Summary: This study examines the impact of psychiatric diagnosis on the behavior of police officers. The results show that compared to individuals with known psychiatric diagnoses, police officers demonstrate increased willingness to help and sympathize with psychiatric patients, while attributing less responsibility to their actions. However, they also exhibit avoidance behaviors, perceive greater danger, and express a higher need for isolation and involuntary treatment, particularly when dealing with schizophrenia.

However, medical visits for schizophrenia, alcoholism, and nicotine dependency decreased during this period.

Stigmatizing attitudes toward mental disorders among non-mental health nurses in general hospitals of China: a national survey

Summary: This study aimed to assess the stigmatizing attitudes of Chinese non-mental health nurses towards patients with mental illness and determine the factors influencing these attitudes. The results of the survey showed the existence of stigmatizing attitudes towards patients with mental disorders among non-mental health nurses in general hospitals in China. Therefore, more mental health education programs for non-mental health nurses are needed to improve their stigmatizing attitudes and provide better quality care to these patients.

Summary: This study aimed to explore public attitudes toward anxiety disorders and the changing trends of these attitudes by analyzing posts related to anxiety disorders on Sina Weibo. The findings showed that there is still a high level of discrimination and stigma against anxiety disorders, particularly in terms of self-denial and negative emotions. People with anxiety disorders should receive more social support to reduce the impact of discrimination and stigma.

Testing the mixed-blessings model: What is the role of essentialism for stigmatizing attitudes towards schizophrenia?

Summary: This study experimentally tested the link between biogenetic explanations and stigma in schizophrenia through an online experiment. The results showed that while subjects in both experimental groups reported a stronger agreement with the presented etiology, this did not lead to higher levels of stigma in the biogenetic group. In contrast, in the psychosocial group, biogenetic causal beliefs were associated with a stronger desire for social distance, which was fully mediated by essentialist thinking. These findings support the assumptions of the mixed-blessings model.

Cross-cultural differences in depression between White British and South Asians: Causal attributions, stigma by association, discriminatory potential

Summary: This study compares the cultural differences in stigma towards depression between White British and South Asians living in the United Kingdom. The results show that South Asians attribute depression to supernatural, moral, and psychosocial causes, while White British endorse biological explanations more. South Asians also exhibit more discriminatory potential and stigma towards individuals with depression. Stigma by association plays a mediating role in the relationship between cultural group and willingness for closeness, while perceived dangerousness mediates willingness for closeness.

A systematic review and narrative synthesis of indirect psychological intervention in acute mental health inpatient settings

However, anti-COVID-19 behavior is influenced by social norms, while prejudice is influenced by positive and negative intergroup contact.

Affective, Cognitive, and Behavioral Mental Illness Stigma in Health Care: A Comparison Between General Ward Nurses and the General Population

Summary: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis that includes all eligible data and evaluates the effect of lithium on suicide, non-fatal suicidal behavior, and suicide attempts. The results suggest that evidence from randomized trials is inconclusive and does not support the idea that lithium prevents suicide or suicidal behavior.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning to analyze global data and examined the influence of social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology factors as well as socio-demographic factors on attitudes and behavioral responses during the pandemic. The results showed that moral identity, morality as cooperation, self-control, and other factors were positively associated with adherence to preventive measures, while endorsement of conspiracy theories showed a negative relationship.
