Summary: This study reviewed 10 studies and found that risk factors for encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) include younger age at PD onset, higher transporter, longer PD duration, longer peritonitis duration, and history of glomerulonephritis. However, sex, use of icodextrin, the number of peritonitis episodes, and history of multicystic kidney disease did not affect the risk of EPS.

Summary: This meta-analysis identified potential risk factors for delayed gastric emptying after pancreaticoduodenectomy or pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy. Age, preoperative biliary drainage, pancreas texture, pancreatic duct size, blood loss, postoperative pancreatic fistula, intra-abdominal collection, and intra-abdominal abscess were significantly associated with delayed gastric emptying.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 571 patients with retroperitoneal neuroblastoma undergoing tumor resection and found a high incidence of perioperative complications but a low mortality rate. Perioperative complications were associated with image-defined risk factors, the International Neuroblastoma Risk Group staging system, retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis, and vascular encasement.

Summary: This study applied a novel comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) strategy to evaluate older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery comprehensively and identify potential risk factors for postoperative complications. The study found that spinal fusion, blood loss, poor activities of daily living (ADL), significant dependence in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), poor renal function, and malnutrition were independent risk factors for postoperative complications in older orthopedic surgery patients.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study analyzed the preoperative complications and their impact on outcomes in children with mesenteric lymphatic malformations (ML). The study found that the location and size of the cyst were independent risk factors for preoperative hemorrhage or infection, and ML in the jejunal mesentery was an independent risk factor for preoperative intestinal volvulus.

Summary: The study identified that a longer duration of ECMO support, higher APTT, and lower platelet count prior to ECMO were independent risk factors for hemorrhage in adults on ECMO. The cannula site was the most common bleeding site, with most bleeding events occurring within the first 3 days of ECMO therapy. The hemorrhage group required significantly more blood transfusions compared to the non-hemorrhage group.

Summary: This study investigates the relevance of clinical and sonographic features as indicators of metastasis in indeterminate lymph nodes and suggests indications for fine-needle aspiration. The results show that the size and sonographic features of lymph nodes are associated with metastasis. Fine-needle aspiration for lymph nodes with specific features can improve diagnostic performance and reduce unnecessary procedures.

Summary: This study investigated preoperative hypokalemia in elderly patients and its effect on postoperative complications. The results showed that female gender, pre-existing hypokalemia at admission, and oral laxative twice or more were independent risk factors for preoperative hypokalemia in elderly patients. However, there was no increase in postoperative complications and 30-day mortality, which may be attributed to the monitoring of blood gas analysis and prompt correction of potassium levels during surgery.

Summary: The nutritional status of cancer patients is closely related to their survival and surgical outcomes. This study investigated the association between preoperative prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and post-operative clinical outcomes in head and neck cancer patients. The results showed that patients with a high PNI had a lower incidence of overall complications, medical complications, and pulmonary complications, but no significant difference in surgical complications. The high PNI group also had a lower risk of mortality. These findings suggest that the PNI score can serve as an independent predictor of postoperative complications in head and neck cancer patients undergoing surgical resection. Preoperative testing and evaluation of PNI may help identify patients at low PNI and high-risk for postoperative surveillance.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of preoperative sleep and its risk factors in different cancer patients requiring surgery. The incidence of preoperative sleep disturbance in cancer patients was found to be 47.8%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that female patients, preoperative anxiety, and confined ward environment were independent risk factors for sleep disturbance in cancer patients.

Summary: This study analyzed the causes and risk factors for postoperative cerebral infarction in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) undergoing surgical revascularization. The results showed that initial presentation as infarction and first revascularization surgery performed on the left hemisphere were independent risk factors for postoperative cerebral infarction, while initial presentation as hemorrhage was a protective factor.

Summary: Preoperative administration of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients with coagulopathy undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) was associated with reduced intraoperative blood loss, decreased risk of 90-day complications (especially cardiovascular and wound complications), shorter hospital stay, and decreased risk of nonhome discharge.
