Cuticular drusen is a specific clinical subtype of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This subtype of AMD has an earlier age at onset, a stronger familial component, and genetic factors play a more prominent role in its development than in the general AMD population. In this review, we describe the clinical characteristics and differential diagnosis of cuticular drusen, as well as systemic associations including membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis type II. We discuss recent genetic and pathophysiological insights, and future therapeutic perspectives are highlighted. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the natural disease course of retinal dystrophies associated with CRB1 and identify clinical end points for future trials. Results showed that over 2 years, BCVA and V4e isopter seeing retinal areas remained relatively stable in the entire cohort, but individual patients showed signs of clinical progression. Microperimetry revealed a significant decrease in retinal sensitivity during follow-up.

Tips to optimize digital education in ophthalmology: Results from ESASO survey

Summary: This study aimed to identify the preferences of audience and faculty in digital education sessions in ophthalmology. The survey results showed that most respondents preferred digital education sessions to last 30-60 minutes without a break, to be held in the evening time-slot of a weekday. The availability of webinars and recorded surgical videos/clinical cases, associated with live discussion, were considered the most important opportunities in digital educational channels.

Summary: The treatment of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC) is controversial. This study reviewed the short-term efficacy of different cCSC treatments and found that half-dose/half-fluence photodynamic therapy (PDT), conventional laser, and selective retina therapy (SRT) provide significant improvement compared to no treatment. Half-dose/half-fluence PDT is the only viable treatment option for cCSC patients.

Long-term follow-up of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy patients after primary treatment of oral eplerenone or half-dose photodynamic therapy and crossover treatment: SPECTRA trial report No. 3

Helena M. A. Feenstra, Elon H. C. van Dijk, Thomas J. van Rijssen, Roula Tsonaka, Roselie M. H. Diederen, Carel B. Hoyng, Reinier O. Schlingemann, Camiel J. F. Boon

Summary: This study compares the anatomic and functional efficacy and safety of primary treatment with half-dose photodynamic therapy (PDT) or oral eplerenone, or crossover treatment in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy patients. The results showed that most patients treated with half-dose PDT achieved complete resolution of subretinal fluid (SRF) after 12 months, and patients who received primary half-dose PDT had better long-term visual acuity compared to those who delayed PDT treatment due to initial eplerenone therapy with persistent SRF.

INCREASING EVIDENCE FOR THE SAFETY OF FOVEA-INVOLVING HALF-DOSE PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY FOR CHRONIC CENTRAL SEROUS CHORIORETINOPATHY

Summary: A retrospective study analyzed the data from two prospective randomized controlled trials to evaluate the risk of foveal atrophy and the likelihood of improvement in structure and function with half-dose photodynamic therapy in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy. The results showed significant improvement in optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence after treatment, with no development of foveal atrophy in any of the patients.

NATURAL COURSE AND CLASSIFICATION OF EXTENSIVE MACULAR ATROPHY WITH PSEUDODRUSEN-LIKE APPEARANCE

Francesco Romano, Mariano Cozzi, Davide Monteduro, Marta Oldani, Camiel J. F. Boon, Giovanni Staurenghi, Anna Paola Salvetti

Summary: This study describes the imaging characteristics and topographic expansion of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and outer retinal atrophy in extensive macular atrophy with pseudodrusen-like appearance. The findings suggest that the primary alterations occur at the outer segment-RPE interface, and the superior sector is the most vulnerable. Visual acuity decline is significantly associated with subfoveal atrophy and fibrosis. A three-stage disease classification is proposed.

Fundus autofluorescence abnormalities can predict fluorescein angiography abnormalities in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy

Danial Mohabati, Camiel J. F. Boon, Carel B. B. Hoyng, Konstantine Purtskhvanidze, Johann Roider, Elon H. C. van Dijk

Summary: This study aims to assess the correlation between findings on fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and fluorescein angiography (FA) in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC) patients. The discrepancy between FAF and FA was measured and compared, and a relationship between the discrepancy and disease characteristics was found. The study suggests that baseline FAF and follow-up duration can predict long-term changes in cCSC.

Helena M. A. Feenstra, Elon H. C. van Dijk, Thomas J. van Rijssen, Roula Tsonaka, Roselie M. H. Diederen, Reinier O. Schlingemann, Carel B. Hoyng, Camiel J. F. Boon

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of crossover treatment between half-dose photodynamic therapy (PDT) and eplerenone treatment in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC). The results showed that half-dose PDT was more effective in resolving subretinal fluid (SRF) and improving foveal sensitivity compared to eplerenone treatment after the failure of primary treatment.

The study found that Leber congenital amaurosis presents in infancy, while vision loss is progressive and becomes severe during mid-to-late adulthood. The study also identifies potential therapeutic endpoints and optimal patient selection.
