How ancestral subsistence strategies solve salmon starvation and the protein problem of Pacific Rim resources

Shannon Tushingham, Loukas Barton, Robert L. Bettinger

Summary: The study explores how hunter-gatherers navigate the challenges of salmon scarcity and the risk of protein toxicity for human survival. It suggests that while fats and carbohydrates can help offset protein thresholds, individuals have varying limits on protein consumption. Seeking out richer sources of fat or carbohydrates may provide a solution to circumvent the protein intake ceiling, essential for evolutionary and cultural survival.

Human adaptation to Holocene environments: Perspectives and promise from China

Elizabeth Berger, Katherine Brunson, Brett Kaufman, Gyoung-Ah Lee, Xinyi Liu, Pauline Sebillaud, Michael Storozum, Loukas Barton, Jacqueline Eng, Gary Feinman, Rowan Flad, Sandra Garvie-Lok, Michelle Hrivnyak, Brian Lander, Deborah C. Merrett, Wa Ye

Summary: First, it is crucial for datasets related to climate change and ancient human-environment interaction to be as local and specific as possible, as the timing of environmental change varies locally and human responses are highly dependent on local social and technological conditions. Second, the field still lacks robust theoretical frameworks for analyzing complex social-natural systems, especially for integrating data on multiple scales. Third, in order for this research to have a meaningful impact on contemporary climate change studies, effective communication of findings to the public and scientists in other disciplines should be prioritized in publication plans.

Paleolakes, archaeology, and late Quaternary paleoenvironments in northwestern Mongolia

Christopher Morgan, Bayarsaikhan Jamsranjav, Tuvshinjargal Tumurbaatar, Loukas Barton

Summary: This study reconstructs the climatic, hydrographic, and environmental conditions of northwestern Mongolia during the terminal Pleistocene and Holocene periods using archaeological and pedological data sets. The combination of archaeological and pedological data reveals a complex late Quaternary picture of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment in the region, emphasizing the importance of using multiple proxies in paleoecological reconstructions.
