In contrast to well understood degradation mechanisms in conventional lubricants generally promoted by thermo-oxidative stress, the degradation of ionic liquids is widely unknown although they are considered as promising novel types of lubricants. Hence, the ionic liquid long-term stability has been evaluated by small scale artificial alteration experiments under thermo-oxidative conditions. The ionic liquid selection was based on non-functionalized and functionalized ammonium type cations with three different counter anions. The identification of ionic liquid degradation products accomplished by high end mass spectrometric methods, namely time-of-flight/reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry and linear quadrupole trap-orbitrap-mass spectrometry, revealed that ionic liquids which were composed of functionalized cation moieties were prone to degradation. Furthermore, the amounts of the most abundant degradation product formed under various artificial alteration conditions have been quantified by ultra high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization linear quadrupole ion trap orbitrap mass spectrometry, suggesting that the ionic liquid degradation preferably takes place at higher temperatures after a longer period of time. The proposed degradation mechanism requires the presence of nucleophilic species such as methanesulphonate anion. The (eco)toxicological impact of the selected ionic liquids have been evaluated by comprehensive toxicity studies and biodegradation experiments. As the evaluation of selected ionic liquids revealed contrary assessments from stability and (eco) toxicological studies, the need for mutual and complementary consideration of the ionic liquids for a successful implementation of ionic liquid lubricants has been disclosed.

Impact of environmental factors on the sampling rate of β-blockers and sulfonamides from water by a carbon nanotube-passive sampler

Klaudia Godlewska, Aleksandra Jakubus, Piotr Stepnowski, Monika Paszkiewicz

Summary: Passive techniques are an evolving method for long-term monitoring of micropollutants in the aquatic environment. This study presents the calibration results of a new CNTs-PSDs and examines the impact of environmental factors on the uptake rate of different analytes. It is concluded that calibration of novel CNTs-PSDs should be conducted under similar physicochemical conditions of the aquatic phase in the environmental matrix.

Review of the toxic effects of ionic liquids

Chul-Woong Cho, Thi Phuong Thuy Pham, Yufeng Zhao, Stefan Stolte, Yeoung-Sang Yun

Summary: Interest in ionic liquids (ILs) has been growing due to their promising properties, but their actual environmental impact needs careful consideration. ILs may not directly cause atmospheric pollution, but can have adverse effects if leaked into the environment. The toxicity effects of ILs depend on their structure and toxicity testing levels.

Summary: The study evaluated the toxicity of mixtures of pharmaceuticals towards three selected organisms and found that the concentration addition model generally provided lower predictions compared to the independent action model. It was concluded that the concentration addition model should be recommended for modeling mixture toxicity of pharmaceuticals with different modes of action.

Summary: Benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs) are a diverse group of chemicals used in various industries worldwide. They can be found in different environmental compartments and have endocrine disrupting effects. Biodegradation and photolytic decomposition are the major elimination processes for BPs, with the formation of hydroxylated BPs during biodegradation showing increased endocrine activity.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the environmental impact of fibrous microplastics (FMPs), including their concentrations, emission, transport, fate, and toxicity effects. The properties of FMPs and the uncertainties surrounding current assessment methods are discussed, highlighting the need for improved determination of exposure levels and better characterization of their effects. Topics for future studies to address the limited understanding of the interactions between FMPs and the environment are also presented.

A Sequential Anammox Zeolite-Biofilter for the Removal of Nitrogen Compounds from Drinking Water

Stephan Eberle, Hilmar Boernick, Stefan Stolte

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of a sequential Anammox zeolite-biofilter for the treatment of drinking water. The results showed that high removal efficiencies of ammonium and nitrite could be achieved with low filter velocities. Lowering substrate concentrations and operating temperatures had minimal impact on nitrogen removal efficiencies. The coupling of zeolite and Anammox processes influenced the ratio of nitrite to ammonium, and reliable process monitoring could be achieved through electrical conductivity measurements. This technology has the potential to significantly improve drinking water quality worldwide and is especially suited for decentralized use in threshold and developing countries.

Environmental Hazard Screening of Heterocyclic Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons: Physicochemical Data and In Silico Models

Goksu Celik, Stephan Beil, Stefan Stolte, Marta Markiewicz

Summary: Heterocyclic polyaromatic hydrocarbons (heterocyclic PAHs) are a common presence in the environment, but they have received less attention and comprehensive assessment than homocyclic PAHs in terms of their environmental behavior. Moreover, the available physicochemical data for heterocyclic PAHs are limited. To address this, the physicochemical properties of heterocyclic PAHs were experimentally determined, and structure-property relationships were established. The data obtained allowed for the evaluation of predictive models and a screening-level comparative hazard assessment of both heterocyclic and homocyclic PAHs.

Natural Zeolites for the Sorption of Ammonium: Breakthrough Curve Evaluation and Modeling

Stephan Eberle, Viktor Schmalz, Hilmar Boernick, Stefan Stolte

Summary: The excessive use of ammonium fertilizer and leakage poses a threat to aquatic environments worldwide. This study focused on evaluating and modeling breakthrough curves for NH4+ in zeolite-filled, fixed-bed columns for drinking water treatment. The Freundlich sorption model successfully described the NH4+ sorption, while unfavorable sorption was observed for K+. Intraparticle diffusion was identified as the rate limiting step for NH4+ and K+ breakthrough. The use of tap, river, and groundwater matrices decreased the treated bed volumes compared to ultrapure water, with K+ and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations being the main parameters affecting NH4+ sorption.
