In this article, an experimental study is conducted to exploit the effects of recess shapes on the phenomenon of pneumatic hammering in aerostatic bearings. Tests are carried out on gas bearings with four different recess shapes, i.e. spherical, rectangular, recessless, and rhombic, respectively. The test results illustrate that pneumatic hammering is related to the natural characteristic of aerostatic bearings, and the vibration status of the pneumatic hammer in aerostatic bearings is deeply affected by recess shape. Further, it is shown that recess shape produces a significant influence on the stable region where pneumatic hammering does not occur in aerostatic bearings.
